Apple has already integrated Thread into several products:
- Apple TV 4K (all generations from 2nd Gen)
- HomePod mini
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
These devices can act as so-called Thread border routers. This means they connect the Thread network to your regular home network and allow you to control your devices via iPhone or Siri. Since iOS 18, it's also been possible to control Thread accessories directly via the iPhone – without the need for a border router.
Why is Thread 1.4 a real step forward?
Thread version 1.4, released in September 2024, takes the protocol to a new level. The central idea: more devices, more stability, more control. You no longer have to rely on the range of your router or individual devices – the network functions as a closed, intelligent, and flexible network. Battery-operated devices also benefit.
