Apple TV unveiled the first teaser for its adaptation of William Gibson's cyberpunk classic at San Diego Comic-Con. The ten-episode series premieres on January 22, 2027, worldwide on the same day. It was also the streaming service's first appearance in Hall H – and it didn't stop at just one announcement.

The event took place over the weekend of July 25th and lasted two hours. It was Apple TV's first time in Comic-Con's largest hall, the venue usually reserved for major studios' blockbuster reveals. The service used the stage for several projects while its regular programming continued throughout July. The most attention was drawn to a series that science fiction readers have been waiting for for decades.

What the series is about

Callum Turner plays Case, a disgraced top hacker who gets caught in a web of digital espionage and organized crime. Alongside him is Molly, played by Briana Middleton – an assassin known in the book as Razorgirl. Together, they are tasked with pulling off a heist against a corporate dynasty that is hiding more than it lets on.

The ensemble also includes Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, Peter Sarsgaard, and Clémence Poésy. Additional roles are played by Max Irons, Dane DeHaan, Junia Rees, Jordan Kouamé, Emma Laird, Marc Menchaca, André De Shields, and Isabella Pappas.

Turner himself announced the teaser – not on stage, however, but via video link, which visibly surprised the audience in Hall H.

Ten episodes, released weekly until March

The launch is on Friday, January 22, 2027, and will be simultaneous worldwide. German subscribers will therefore not have to wait any longer than American subscribers. Apple will begin with two episodes, and then release a new one every Friday until March 19, 2027 – the service's usual weekly release schedule.

There's roughly a six-month gap between the teaser and the premiere. For a series that doesn't even have a full trailer yet, that's an unusually early release. In Germany, access to the streaming service costs €9.99 per month.

Who is behind the production

Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content are responsible for the series. Graham Roland and JD Dillard developed it for television; Roland serves as showrunner, and Dillard directs the first three episodes. Executive producers include David Levine, Garrett Kemble, Zack Hayden, musicians Drake and Future through their company DreamCrew Entertainment, and William Gibson himself.

Gibson's debut novel was published in 1984 and won the Nebula Award, the Philip K. Dick Award, and the Hugo Award. It is considered a foundational text of cyberpunk and forms the first book in the Sprawl trilogy, continued in "Count Zero" and "Mona Lisa Overdrive." There have been numerous attempts to adapt it for film over the decades – none have made it to the screen.

What else Apple showed in Hall H

The press release only covers part of the evening. Five other projects were presented on stage:

TitleWhat was shownStart
Matchbox The MovieFirst trailerstill open
MaydayFirst-look materialSeptember 4, 2026
Dark Matter, Season 2Official trailerAugust 28, 2026
Widow's Bay, Season 2First scenes2027
Silo, Season 3Additional materialIt has been running since July 3rd.

"Matchbox The Movie," produced by Skydance Media and Mattel Studios, is loosely based on the toy car brand and stars John Cena, Sam Richardson, and Jessica Biel. Filming took place in locations including Budapest and Slovakia. Cena explained in San Diego that he performed some of his own stunts.

The second season of Dark Matter premieres on August 28, making it the service's next major series release. The action film Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds, follows on September 4; Comic-Con footage showed him and Kenneth Branagh on the run from the KGB. The horror series Widow's Bay was renewed for a second season in June and will return in 2027 – its first season garnered 19 Emmy nominations. Silo rounded out the lineup, with its third season airing since July 3.

Apple's science fiction course is getting a calendar

Five of the six titles shown are in the science fiction or genre genres. With "Silo", "Dark Matter", "Severance" and now "Neuromancer", Apple TV is building a profile that clearly distinguishes itself from the broader offerings of its competitors – and Hall H is the venue where precisely this audience is seated.

There's still plenty of time until January, though. A full trailer, a German-language release, and how closely the series follows Gibson's original work remain unknown. (Image: Apple)
