The sci-fi series Dark Matter returns with ten new episodes. Apple TV has confirmed the release date of August 28, 2026, and released initial plot details.

Dark Matter is one of the most successful sci-fi series on Apple TV. The release date for the second season has now been set: the first episode will premiere on August 28, 2026, followed by a new episode weekly until October 30. The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, who also serves as showrunner and writer for the second season. Joel Edgerton and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly return in the lead roles.

The first season of Dark Matter told the story of Jason Dessen, a physicist and family man who is abducted one evening on his way home to an alternate version of his life. What initially seems fascinating quickly turns into a nightmare as he tries to return to his original reality—through a bewildering landscape of lives he could have lived. The series was critically acclaimed and is considered one of Apple's strongest science fiction shows.

What happens in season 2

The second season picks up where the first left off. The Dessens have settled in a world that finally seems safe – until unforeseen events force them to flee once again. Jason's obsession with the box deepens, while Daniela's growing paranoia threatens the family's fragile stability.

Meanwhile, Amanda and Ryan join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. Leighton, unwaveringly pursues his vision of a perfect world, while Blair is determined to stop him. The season comprises ten episodes, all written by Crouch along with co-writer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry.

Cast and Production

Alongside Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, who also serve as executive producers, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel are returning. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Apple TV. Blake Crouch, in addition to his role as showrunner and writer, is also an executive producer, along with Matt Tolmach and Richard Lederer.

The book on which the series is based celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and is considered one of the best science fiction works of recent times.

Apple TV expands its sci-fi catalog

With Dark Matter Season 2, Apple TV strengthens its sci-fi portfolio, which already includes shows like Silo, For All Mankind, Foundation, and Severance. Since its launch in November 2019, the service has garnered a total of 773 awards and over 3,300 nominations. Apple TV costs €9.99 per month and is also available through Apple One.
