The season finale of Shrinking is just around the corner. Co-creator Bill Lawrence reveals that this will mark the end of one narrative arc – and that season 4 will open a completely new chapter.

Shrinking is one of the most successful series on Apple TV and has established itself as a fan favorite and critics alike since its first season. The third season has been airing since the end of January 2026, and the eleventh and final episode will be released this Tuesday. It's already confirmed that the show will continue: Apple officially renewed it for a fourth season in January. Now, co-creator Bill Lawrence has revealed for the first time what viewers can expect.

The end of a three-part story

In a post on Threads, Lawrence wrote that the season finale marks the end of "this story." This confirms what he had already hinted at in previous interviews: Shrinking was conceived from the beginning as a three-year arc. The first season dealt with grief, the second with forgiveness, and season three revolves around moving on.

This story arc concludes with Tuesday's eleventh episode. The originally planned twelve episodes were reduced to eleven in favor of a longer double premiere – a decision that caused confusion for many viewers, as several considered last week's tenth episode to be the finale.

Season 4 brings a new Story

For season 4, Lawrence announced a deliberate break. In another Threads post, he spoke of a "new story" and a new chapter. At the same time, he clarified that the existing cast would remain. Whether this applies to all characters without exception, he left open – perhaps the season finale itself will provide the first clues.

The combination of a new storyline and a familiar cast could give Shrinking an unusually long lifespan. Many series lose their momentum after their original story concludes; the fact that Lawrence defined a clear structure from the outset suggests a well-thought-out development.

Shrinking as a pillar of the Apple TV portfolio

Following Ted Lasso and Bad Monkey, this series marks the third collaboration between Apple, Bill Lawrence, and Warner Bros. Television. Lawrence and Brett Goldstein are under a master deal with Warner. Jason Segel, who not only stars but also serves as co-creator and producer, also regularly collaborates with Apple TV.

Shrinking has been nominated for multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, and Michael Urie received a Critics' Choice Award for his performance in the second season. In the third season, Apple expanded the cast to include Jeff Daniels and Michael J. Fox, among others. The series thus underscores Apple's strategy of focusing on long-term successful originals with high creative quality – an approach also reflected in the recent renewals of Severance, Silo, and The Morning Show.

Shrinking: When will season 4 be released?

A specific release date for the fourth season has not yet been announced. Since previous seasons were released annually – season 1 in January 2023, season 2 in October 2024, and season 3 in January 2026 – a launch in early 2027 is conceivable. However, this has not been confirmed. Shrinking is available on Apple TV. The service costs €9.99 per month and is also available through the Apple One bundle. (Image: Apple)
