Apple Maps will be integrated into Ford electric cars by 2027

Apple is sharing its maps with an automaker for the first time – not as an iPhone mirror, but as an integral part of the vehicle. Ford will integrate Apple Maps into its new electric platform starting in 2027, made possible by a previously unknown developer tool. With this move, Apple is entering a market segment previously dominated by Google and Mapbox in the automotive industry.

Apple and Ford announced a collaboration on Thursday that will bring Apple Maps directly to Ford's upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform (UEV). The maps will then run on the vehicle's screens, based on a new SDK called MapKit for Automotive. The launch is planned for 2027. This marks a new role for Apple's Maps app: Previously an application on Apple devices, it has primarily focused on content enhancements, such as the new features in iOS 27. Now it will become a component that another company licenses and integrates into its own product.

What Ford drivers will see on the display

The range of functions that Apple specifies for the UEV models largely corresponds to what the Maps app offers today: turn-by-turn directions in natural language, real-time traffic and disruption alerts, a search with detailed maps, and multiple route suggestions per destination.

In addition, there's a section specifically designed for electric cars. The route planning takes the battery charge level into account and schedules charging stops; it also pre-warms the battery before arriving at a fast-charging station. In practice, this pre-conditioning determines whether a charging process takes twenty or forty minutes – a cold battery accepts significantly less power.

A map module instead of a cockpit takeover

The scope of the partnership is remarkable because Apple already offers a significantly more comprehensive solution with CarPlay Ultra. There, Apple takes over the entire cockpit, including the speedometer and climate controls, going far beyond classic CarPlay. It was precisely this range that deterred several manufacturers: Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Polestar, Renault, and Volvo all declined, and since the launch with Aston Martin in May 2025, the list of delivered models has remained short.

MapKit for Automotive takes a different approach. The SDK only provides the map, and the manufacturer adapts its appearance to their own operating system. Ford thus retains the interface, the brand, and control over the rest of the vehicle – and only acquires the component that Apple handles better than most suppliers. For Apple, in turn, the barrier to entry is significantly lowered because no manufacturer has to relinquish half their vehicle's interior anymore.

Road data for Ford's hands-free driving

The second part of the agreement operates beneath the surface. Ford receives road data from Apple Maps and uses it to develop the next generation of BlueCruise, its in-house system for hands-free driving on highways. Ford's subsidiary Latitude AI is responsible for this.

This means Apple's map data is being incorporated into the development of a driver assistance system – a field previously served by specialized map providers like Here or TomTom. Apple has been re-collecting its map data using its own measurement vehicles since 2018, and the resulting level of detail at the street level is precisely what Ford is emphasizing.

Navigation also without an iPhone in the vehicle

Because the maps are permanently integrated into the vehicle's system, their use is no longer dependent on a connected phone. Drivers without iPhones can also see Apple's navigation – a break with the previous principle that Apple's software required Apple hardware. Classic CarPlay remains available alongside it, as Apple has explicitly confirmed; iPhone users therefore lose none of the features CarPlay offers in iOS 27.

Regarding data privacy, Apple promises the same rules as in the Maps app: location data and map activity in the vehicle will not be recorded in a way that allows them to be linked to a specific person. The announcement does not specify whether and how Ford collects its own vehicle data.

Why integration has not yet reached Germany

The first UEV model is a midsize pickup truck, which Ford is having built at its Louisville, Kentucky plant and plans to launch in the US in 2027 at a target price of around $30,000. While Ford identifies the plant as a production site for the US market and exports, it has made it clear that the platform should first prove itself in the United States before being rolled out to Europe.

For you as a Ford driver in Germany, nothing will change in the foreseeable future. Ford's European electric vehicle lineup runs on completely different platforms: the Explorer and Capri are built in Cologne on Volkswagen's MEB platform, and since December 2025, two further Ford electric models have been added, built by Renault on its Ampere platform in northern France. The first of these is scheduled to go on sale in early 2028 – entirely without a UEV platform and therefore without the map integration that's the subject of this discussion.

Apple Maps is becoming a supplier product

The real issue is less the Ford partnership itself than the underlying SDK. Apple has presented MapKit for Automotive as a tool for automakers in general, not as a custom solution for a single customer, and Ford CEO Jim Farley phrases it as his company being among the first – not the very first. Further agreements of this kind are therefore likely.

This makes perfect sense for Apple. The maps are becoming a product that can generate revenue independently of the iPhone, and they're reaching vehicles that previously used Google Maps. Apple's simultaneous introduction of advertising in Apple Maps fits into the same picture.
