With the MacBook Neo, Apple is launching a new laptop that covers a significantly lower price range than previous Mac models. The device starts at €699, which is almost half the price of a MacBook Air.

The MacBook Neo isn't simply a cheaper Mac. Apple describes it as a completely new category within the Mac line. The goal is to give more people worldwide access to a Mac without sacrificing typical Apple quality.

A new approach to an affordable Mac

In an interview with Techradar, Colleen Novielli, Director of Mac Product Marketing at Apple, explained that the company is deliberately taking a new approach with the MacBook Neo. Instead of using older technology and offering it at a lower price, the device was developed from the ground up.

According to Novielli, many PCs in this price range offer a user experience that is "just about okay." Apple, on the other hand, wanted to develop a product that offers thoughtful usability and high-quality materials, even in this price range.

Optimizing the user experience is a kind of obsession for Apple and also plays a central role in the MacBook Neo.

A new category in Apple's portfolio

According to Apple, the MacBook Neo is not intended to replace existing models. Rather, it is meant to tap into a new market.

For Apple, which is primarily known for premium devices, a laptop in this price range is unusual. However, the company expects to reach significantly more customers worldwide with the MacBook Neo.

A key factor in this is Apple's efficient supply chain. Its warehousing and delivery channels are organized in such a way that demand can be met both immediately after launch and in the long term.

Price, storage and availability

The MacBook Neo is now available for pre-order. Shipping begins on March 11th. Key specifications:

  • Starting price: 699 euros
  • Storage: 256 GB in the base version
  • Optional version: 512 GB storage
  • Pre-order: already possible
  • Delivery: from March 11th

When purchasing, Apple recommends considering the actual storage requirements and whether 512 GB of storage is really necessary.

According to Novielli, Touch ID does not play a decisive role in this decision.

Why the name "MacBook Neo" was chosen

The device's name was also chosen deliberately. Apple wanted a name that suited the product's character.

According to Novielli, the name MacBook Neo is intended to sound fun, friendly, and fresh. This is meant to emphasize the laptop's appearance and its position as a new, accessible product line.

No successor to the 12-inch MacBook

Some observers see parallels to the 12-inch MacBook that Apple introduced in 2015. Many had expected that this model would eventually be relaunched with Apple Silicon.

However, the device at that time started at over 1,000 euros, placing it in a significantly higher price range.

Novielli clarified that the MacBook Neo is not a successor to this model. According to Apple, the new device was completely redesigned and is not based on a previous MacBook generation.

MacBook Neo: Apple's new entry into a more affordable Mac class

With the MacBook Neo, Apple is significantly expanding its product strategy. The laptop is aimed at a broader target group and offers a comparatively affordable entry into the Mac world.

Despite the low starting price, Apple emphasizes that the device is not a stripped-down recycling of old hardware. Instead, it is a newly developed product intended to deliver Apple's high standards for design, materials, and user experience even at a more affordable price point. (Image: Apple)
