Pro Display XDR is being discontinued

The Pro Display XDR is no longer in production. Apple is discontinuing its flagship external monitor and replacing it with the new Studio Display XDR. This marks the end of a display that has defined the company's professional monitor lineup since 2019.

When the Pro Display XDR was introduced in 2019 alongside the Mac Pro, it was clearly aimed at professional users in film production, photography, and design. For several years, it was the only external display in Apple's lineup.

With a price of around €6,000 for the standard version and an additional €1,000 for the separately available Pro Stand, it was among the most expensive monitors on the market. The total price was around €7,000. In return, it offered a 32-inch panel and an uncompromising focus on image quality and build quality.

The Studio Display XDR as successor

Now the Studio Display XDR takes over as the flagship model. Technically, Apple has taken things a step further. The new display uses a mini-LED panel with more backlight zones and offers a 120Hz refresh rate.

Unlike the Pro Display XDR, this model features integrated speakers and a camera. A tilt- and height-adjustable stand is also included. The price is around €3,499 including the stand, significantly less than the previous top-of-the-line model.

However, the new display is smaller. Instead of 32 inches like the Pro Display XDR, the Studio Display XDR offers a screen diagonal of 27 inches.

A change of strategy in the display sector

Alongside the Studio Display XDR, a new version of the standard Studio Display was also announced. Apple is thus broadening its monitor portfolio and combining modern technology with lower entry-level prices.

The Mac Pro remains available and is currently offered with the M2 Ultra chip. The price is around €8,299. While the high-end workstation remains in the product line, production of the previous reference display is ending.

Studio Display XDR replaces Pro Display XDR

With the discontinuation of the Pro Display XDR, a 32-inch display specifically designed for professionals disappears from the market. The Studio Display XDR takes its place with modern Mini-LED technology, a 120Hz refresh rate, and integrated features, but in a more compact form and at a significantly lower price.
