A code snippet has surfaced in the beta version of iOS 26.4, hinting at a possible integration of Apple TV into CarPlay. Specifically, it concerns an Apple TV app that could play content directly on the vehicle's display. Playback would apparently only be possible when the vehicle is parked. Apple had already quietly laid the groundwork for video playback in CarPlay with iOS 26. This new discovery in iOS 26.4 now provides the first clear indication that Apple TV could officially become part of this feature.

CarPlay has been evolving for years from a simple interface for navigation and music control into an expanded infotainment platform. With increasingly larger displays in modern vehicles, there is growing potential for additional media functions.

Such features are becoming increasingly important, especially for electric vehicles with longer charging times. Streaming services in cars are not a new concept, but with iOS 26.4, Apple could integrate this area more deeply into its own ecosystem.

Code found in the iOS 26.4 beta

The reference to Apple TV in CarPlay comes from the beta version of iOS 26.4. The code was discovered by user Aaronp613, who published the snippet on X.

The code consists of only a few lines, but contains specific references to an Apple TV app within CarPlay. Users will be prompted to log in to Apple TV via their iPhone to use the app in the vehicle. Data privacy information is also referenced. The instructions are clearly worded, but provide no details on the technical implementation or the exact range of functions.

Video playback only when parked

A key point is the restriction to the parked state. Apple had already introduced video playback in CarPlay with iOS 26, but only when the vehicle was stationary.

Code discovered in iOS 26.4 also suggests that this rule remains in effect. Videos should only be playable when the car is parked. The function remains disabled while driving. This restriction complies with standard automotive safety regulations and is intended to prevent distractions.

Possible ways the Apple TV app works

It's reasonable to assume that the Apple TV app in CarPlay will be based on the familiar iPhone version. It's likely that familiar sections like "Up Next" or "Library" will be available, allowing users to select and launch content.

The fact that the app logs in via iPhone suggests that the Apple account will continue to be managed through the smartphone. The CarPlay app would therefore be tightly linked to the iPhone and wouldn't require a separate account structure in the vehicle. Whether content is streamed directly or mirrored via the iPhone is not clear from the code.

A sensible addition in light of modern displays

The integration of Apple TV into CarPlay aligns with current trends in the automotive sector. Infotainment systems are becoming larger, higher resolution, and more powerful.

Especially in vehicles with large central displays, a streaming app makes more sense than it did a few years ago. This is particularly true for electric cars, which have longer charging times. Content could be conveniently consumed via the vehicle's display while charging.

For passengers, a large display directly connected to the vehicle's sound system is also more practical than a single smartphone or tablet. Content would be more easily accessible to all passengers.

Potential weaknesses due to display quality

Despite the advantages, there is a potential disadvantage. Many vehicles, especially those with third-party displays, rely on rather basic and sometimes highly reflective screens.

Such displays cannot always accurately reproduce colors, contrasts, and brightness. As a result, streamed content may not be of the same quality as when displayed on high-end televisions or tablets.

However, the quality of infotainment systems is constantly evolving. New generations of vehicles increasingly rely on better panels, which should also improve media playback in the car.

iOS 26.4 suggests Apple TV integration in CarPlay

Code discovered in the beta version of iOS 26.4 strongly suggests an Apple TV app for CarPlay. Login will reportedly be via the iPhone, use will apparently only be possible when the car is parked, and the integration is likely to closely resemble the existing Apple TV app.

Even though Apple hasn't officially announced the feature yet, the expansion makes sense given modern vehicle displays and the increasing charging times of electric cars. If Apple TV does indeed become part of CarPlay, iOS 26.4 would significantly enhance the in-car infotainment experience.
