OpenAI is strengthening its team with the addition of Peter Steinberger, the developer of the AI assistant OpenClaw. This appointment is particularly significant because OpenClaw has gained considerable attention in recent weeks. The project represents a new type of AI system that not only responds but also acts autonomously. With the move to OpenAI, the focus shifts from an independent project to its integration into one of the world's most influential AI companies.

The AI industry is no longer just about chatbots that generate text. The trend is moving towards so-called AI agents, i.e., systems that perform tasks independently. OpenClaw positioned itself precisely in this area. The fact that the developer of this project is now moving to OpenAI sends a clear signal: OpenAI wants to actively shape the next generation of personal assistants.

The development of OpenClaw

Peter Steinberger, an Austrian developer, originally started his project under the name Clawdbot. Later it was renamed Moltbot. Only in recent weeks was the current name OpenClaw established.

The first name change was due to legal reasons. Anthropic threatened legal action because the original name bore too strong a resemblance to the AI system Claude. To avoid potential litigation, the project was renamed. The second name change was for personal reasons: Steinberger preferred the new name.

OpenClaw brought greater visibility to the project. Its central message was to develop an AI "that actually does something". This meant a system that goes beyond simply outputting text and actively takes on tasks.

What OpenClaw does

OpenClaw promises concrete actionable insights. The system is designed to, among other things:

  • Manage calendar
  • Book flights
  • Be part of a social network with other AI assistants

The approach aims to create an AI that acts as a personal assistant and operates independently in digital environments. This distinguishes OpenClaw from traditional chatbots, which primarily provide information or compose texts.

The switch to OpenAI

In a blog post, Steinberger explained his decision to move to OpenAI. He made it clear that he could have built OpenClaw into a large company, but that goal didn't appeal to him.

Instead of building a large company, he wants to change the world. For him, collaborating with OpenAI is the fastest way to achieve this goal for everyone.

This statement makes it clear that his focus was less on corporate growth and more on impact and scalability. OpenAI provides the necessary infrastructure, reach, and technological foundation for this.

The role at OpenAI

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, commented on the move on the X platform. In his new position, Steinberger will "drive the next generation of personal assistants".

This makes it clear that OpenAI intends to strategically expand its focus on AI agents. The emphasis is on systems that can independently plan and execute tasks. Steinberger's experience with OpenClaw fits this profile perfectly.

Future of OpenClaw

Despite the change, OpenClaw is not disappearing. According to Altman, the project will continue as an open-source initiative. It will be organized within a foundation that will continue to support OpenAI.

This means that the technology remains openly accessible while maintaining a connection to OpenAI. This allows the community to further develop it, while OpenAI benefits from the open innovation process.

Steinberger's move strengthens OpenAI in the agent field

Peter Steinberger's move to OpenAI marks an important step in the field of autonomous AI assistants. OpenClaw garnered attention with its approach, which aimed to go beyond traditional chatbot functions. This expertise will now be directly integrated into OpenAI's development work.

At the same time, OpenClaw will remain as an open-source project and will continue to exist within a foundation. This creates a combination of independent further development and strategic integration into one of the world's leading AI companies. (Image: Shutterstock / Stock all)
