Siri AI has been officially announced for the new HomePod mini 2, but not for the larger HomePod. However, a caption in Apple's own store also describes the larger model with the Siri AI light. This caption is even available on the German order page.

With the HomePod mini 2, Apple introduced its first speaker on October 13th that is slated to receive Siri AI via a later update. The second-generation HomePod remained unchanged at the launch; Apple made no mention of any plans for it.

The developer pdfu, who regularly analyzes Apple's software and websites, discovered the issue. It concerns the alternative text of an image—the description that screen readers read aloud and which is otherwise invisible. It appears on the order page for the HomePod in the German Apple Store.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • A caption on Apple's order page describes the large HomePod with "multicolored Siri AI Glow on top".
  • The text appeared on the US website on October 14th and was translated word for word on the German website.
  • Apple has officially announced Siri AI only for the HomePod mini 2, via a later update and initially excluding Germany.
  • The image caption follows the exact pattern of the HomePod mini 2 and could also be a copy error.

What the caption says

At the bottom of the order page, Apple places the two current speakers side by side. Both images have alternative text with the same structure. For the HomePod mini 2, on the German page it reads: "HomePod mini 2, White, compact spherical design, seamless acoustic mesh fabric, multicolored Siri AI Glow on top".

Big updates to the HomePod 2 product page this morning. May suggest support for Siri AI is coming. The Siri examples now use Siri AI's gradient style, and the refreshed glow matches Siri's look on HomePod mini 2. https://t.co/5X1sbwsC4T

The description for the larger model reads "HomePod, White, regular-size cylindrical design, seamless acoustic mesh, multi-colored Siri AI Glow on top." The US website displays the same text in English. Both versions were available on the afternoon of October 14th.

There is no comparable indication on the HomePod product page itself. There, Apple continues to describe Siri without the addition of "AI".

Note or copy error

The situation with Apple TV provides a strong indication. Apple has announced Siri AI not only for the new model, but also for older devices from the second generation onwards. Furthermore, the system behind Siri AI is already present in the current HomePod software, as a discovery in HomePod software version 27 in September revealed. The feature had been disabled on all previous models.

However, the way the two texts were created argues against this. They follow the same structure word for word; only the name, format, and size differ. Whoever used the HomePod mini 2 text as a template could simply have left the last part as is. Furthermore, the larger HomePod already has a multi-colored illuminated surface that lights up when Siri requests are made.

New model or update for the existing one

After the discovery in the HomePod software, it was widely expected that Siri AI would only arrive on the larger HomePod with new hardware. The image caption, however, suggests it will be available on the existing model. Both scenarios are possible if Apple launches the feature with a successor model and later adds it to the current HomePod, as they did with Apple TV.

None of this is confirmed. According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning a new, larger HomePod, but it didn't appear in the list of devices for the fall.

What an update would bring in this country

I consider the caption a hint, not an announcement. Apple has shown with the HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV that Siri AI on these speakers will initially launch only in English and in eight countries; Germany is not among them. I expect an update for the larger HomePod to follow the same path.

Anyone buying a second-generation HomePod for €399 right now shouldn't do so because of Siri AI. Even with an update, Siri on the device would remain unchanged for the time being in this country.

Do you believe in Siri AI for the larger HomePod, or was it just a forgotten phrase from the HomePod mini 2 template? Let us know your prediction in the comments.
