Even before its release, the repair prices for Apple's smart home hub have been set. Without AppleCare+, Apple is charging $279 in the US for any type of damage. The device itself costs $299.
Apple Home View is available as a tabletop and wall-mounted model, both priced at $299 in the US. Pre-orders opened on October 13th, with shipping beginning November 13th. Apple has also added out-of-warranty repair fees to the Home View service and repair page.
In this country, however, this is only a minor point. Apple does not sell Home View in the EU, and Switzerland is not among the launch countries either.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Without AppleCare+, a HomeView repair costs $279 in the US, for both models.
- With AppleCare+, the fee for accidental damage is $39.
- Apple does not differentiate between types of damage; there is only the category "other damage".
- The repair therefore costs around 93 percent of the new price.
A fee for each instance of damage
Apple lists only one category for Home View damage: other damage. Whether the display is cracked or the speaker fails makes no difference to the price. This applies to both the desktop and wall-mounted models, even though only the desktop model has a speaker stand.
| Case | Fee in the USA |
|---|---|
| Repair without AppleCare+ | $279 |
| Accident damage with AppleCare+ | 39 dollars |
| New price for comparison | $299 |
Depending on the state, additional taxes may apply. If the device needs to be sent in, Apple also states that a shipping fee may apply. Apple will finalize the price only after inspecting the device. Apple does not specify whether HomeView will be repaired or replaced.
What the warranty covers
In the US, the standard warranty is Apple's limited warranty. This covers manufacturing defects for one year from the date of purchase, but not accidental damage or normal wear and tear. With AppleCare+, Apple says HomeView is covered against any number of drops and liquid spills for a fee of $39 each.
Apple offers a 90-day warranty on repairs and replacement parts. If the remaining warranty period of the device is longer, that period applies.
HomePod pattern with smaller spacing
The cost of repairing Apple's speakers isn't new. Back in 2018, Apple also charged $279 for a repair without AppleCare+ on the first HomePod, and $79 for the HomePod mini in 2020.
| Device | New price in the USA at launch | Repair without AppleCare+ | share of the new price |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomePod (2018) | $349 | $279 | approximately 80 percent |
| HomePod mini (2020) | 99 dollars | 79 dollars | approximately 80 percent |
| HomeView (2026) | $299 | $279 | approximately 93 percent |
The percentages are calculated from the prices mentioned. For both speakers, the repair cost at the time was around four-fifths of the new price. For HomeView, it's now only $20 less than the device itself.
Why AppleCare+ is hardly optional with HomeView
I consider AppleCare+ the only sensible option for Home View as long as the device isn't permanently wall-mounted. A desktop device with a display sits openly in the kitchen or living room, and if it gets damaged, the cost difference compared to buying a new one is negligible. The situation is somewhat less stressful with a wall-mounted model because it's permanently installed.
For buyers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this remains theoretical for now. There is no Euro fee because Apple doesn't offer HomeView in these countries.
If a $299 device costs $279 to repair, would you even bother, or would you just buy a new one? Tell us in the comments how you would calculate this.
