While Apple has pointed out the improved graphics capabilities of the new Apple Silicon Macs, there has been no comment on the M1 chip's support for eGPU technologies.

As the US blog AppleInsider reported, Apple Silicon Macs cannot support external graphics processing units. This means that the new Mac mini, MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro will only use their own on-processor GPUs. There was already speculation about this, which resulted from a support document for developers. According to this, Apple seems to be dropping external GPUs. The current developer document now primarily refers to what it calls "Apple family GPUs" describesIn addition, Apple has removed the preferred solution, the Blackmagic eGPU, from the list of compatible accessories for the Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon chips.

Apple M1 chip: Later generations could change that

Apple's support for external GPUs is relatively new. There have also been occasional outages, with certain combinations of Mac and GPU card causing problems in macOS Catalina. It remains unknown whether later generations of Apple Silicon processors will restore eGPU support. One possible candidate would be the so-called A14T chip, which has already been mentioned several times by different sources. The actual name is probably different.
