Apple has introduced a new version of its MagSafe charger. The biggest change is support for Qi2 25W, also known as Qi 2.2. This significantly increases charging speed and compatibility.
Since the introduction of MagSafe, Apple has consistently focused on further development. The first generation brought magnetic wireless charging exclusively to iPhones, while the second generation primarily increased stability and charging performance. The third version now takes things beyond the Apple world: The Qi2 25W certification opens the door to broader use, including for devices from other manufacturers like Google.
Third generation of the MagSafe charger
The current model is already the third version of the MagSafe charger. Its appearance remains virtually unchanged and it is available with a 1-meter or 2-meter USB-C cable. The price in Germany is between €49 and €59, depending on the selected cable length.
Qi2 25W certification
The most significant change is support for Qi2 25W. While the previous version of the charger could only charge iPhones at up to 25 watts, Apple has now significantly expanded compatibility. With the certification, smartphones like Google's new Pixel 10 models and other compatible devices can also be charged wirelessly at up to 25 watts.
Compatibility with iPhones
All iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models support Qi2 25W after the iOS 26 update—with the exception of the iPhone 16e. These devices can then be charged at full speed not only with the new MagSafe charger, but also with other Qi2 25W chargers from manufacturers such as Belkin and Aukey.
Role of iOS 26
The iOS 26 operating system update is crucial for fully utilizing the Qi2 25W standard. Only after the update is it possible to achieve the higher charging speed with all compatible devices. For users, this means that the full potential of the new MagSafe charger can only be realized in combination with the update.
