iPhone 17: These countries no longer have a SIM slot

At the same time, the iPhone 17 series features one of the biggest camera improvements in recent years: a new 18-megapixel front-facing camera with a center stage and innovative square sensor.

Apple is gradually moving away from the traditional SIM card. What began with the iPhone 14 series in the US is now reaching other markets worldwide with the iPhone 17. This is not only changing the way we use mobile communications, but also the design and functionality of the devices. Particularly exciting: The elimination of the SIM card tray creates space for larger batteries. At the same time, Apple is taking the selfie camera to a whole new level – a detail that will be particularly noticeable in everyday life.

eSIM-only in selected countries

The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models are available exclusively with eSIM in certain regions. These include:

In these countries, physical SIM cards are no longer supported. This means that mobile communications only work via the integrated eSIM.

Advantages of the eSIM

Apple has been promoting the eSIM as a more secure alternative for years. It can't simply be removed from a lost or stolen iPhone. Furthermore, at least eight different eSIMs can be stored on a single device at the same time, which is especially useful for frequent travelers. This makes switching between providers or plans much easier.

Different equipment depending on the market

Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea: iPhone 17 models with eSIM and Nano-SIM slot.
China: Support only for classic Nano-SIM cards.
iPhone Air: exclusively eSIM worldwide, even in China.
