A device that sits in the living room and is intended to be used by multiple people needs to be able to distinguish who is standing in front of it. How Apple plans to solve this problem is now revealed in the code of a released Mac update – and the answer is quite something.
The editors at MacRumors have discovered strings in macOS Tahoe 26.7 relating to the upcoming home hub. These strings describe a device with multiple user profiles and a feature Apple internally calls "ambient sensing"—an environmental sensing system that detects who is in front of the screen. This clarifies a point that was previously unclear in the Apple HomePad's description: how a shared device would differentiate between personal and external content.

Two things stand out in the messages. Firstly, they mention someone speaking – meaning the recognition relies not only on the camera image but also on the voice. Secondly, the last message requests explicit and temporary permission for environmental sensing. This isn't a continuously running recognition feature, but one that requires active authorization – at least in this stage of development.
The control center is intended as the user interface. This aligns with the expected underlying architecture: The home hub is supposed to use a system similar to tvOS, and the profile selection is located in the same place there.
Two designs have thus been confirmed
The discovery also provides confirmation. References to a wall-mounted version appear in the code, thus confirming the previously reported division into two models: one for hanging, one with a speaker base for a table or shelf.
This discovery is part of a series. The same file from the Mac update had already revealed the user interface of the Smart Home Hub a few days earlier, and the renovation of Apple Stores over the weekend suggested an imminent launch. The code originates from a file that was already being distributed to customers – the discovery itself is therefore confirmed, but the interpretation regarding a specific device remains inferred.
Why camera recognition is sparking a different debate in this country
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a device with a camera that can distinguish between people in a living space touches upon a legal situation that goes beyond a mere description of its function. According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), biometric data used for the unambiguous identification of a person falls under the special categories of personal data – its processing is subject to stricter requirements than that for ordinary usage data.

How Apple resolves this difference will be more crucial for the European market than the speed of profile switching.

But therein lies the risk. If the system identifies the wrong person, private appointments, messages, or reminders will appear on a screen in front of someone else. The detected messages show that Apple has considered this possibility – in case of doubt, nothing is displayed, and instead, the user is asked for permission. Whether this is perceived as a safety net or a nuisance in everyday use will determine the success of the feature.
