Apple Stores are undergoing a major renovation this fall. Ironically, it's the sheer scale of this work that's raising eyebrows: the effort involved would be unusually large for just two refurbished existing devices.
Apple's smart home plans have been delayed for years because the new Siri generation wasn't ready. Now, a clue has emerged from an unexpected source: store planning. Mark Gurman reports in his Bloomberg Power-On newsletter that Apple is remodeling the home sections of its stores this fall – and infers from this that more than just an interim step is in store. This would also affect the device that, in the current picture of the Apple HomePad, has been the last to arrive.
Key Facts at a Glance
- According to the report, Apple plans to reorganize parts of its retail space and set up new accessory areas.
- According to the report, this effort would be too great for just a refreshed Apple TV and a new HomePod mini.
- This suggests that the home hub with display could start up together with the other two devices.
- This contradicts the information from the end of July, according to which the home headquarters was not expected to appear until significantly later. Both pieces of information have so far been presented side by side.
What is being reported about the store renovation
Specifically, the changes concern the areas where Apple displays its Home products. Parts of the so-called Avenues – the wall niches along the store's sides – will be rearranged, and additional space will be created for accessories. The timeframe is autumn, precisely the window in which a refreshed Apple TV and a new HomePod mini will be released.
This should not be confused with the redesign of the digital shopping experience: at the beginning of August, Apple revamped the accessories section in its online store and Apple Store app, with curated collections and more refined filters. The change now being reported, however, affects the sales floor itself – shelves, wall niches, and demonstration areas.
The scope as an argument
The calculation in the report is simple: Two updated devices, both of which already exist, don't require any rearranged wall space. A product that has never existed in this form before, however, does – it needs its own presentation area, its own accessories, and personnel to demonstrate it.
The smart home hub is expected to feature a roughly seven-inch square display and will be available in two versions: one with an integrated speaker, and another with magnets on the back for wall mounting. An A18 chip is rumored to power it. Just a few days ago, discoveries in the system code revealed the user interface of the smart home hub – a further indication that development is well advanced.
Where the report contradicts the current state of affairs
At the end of July, the situation looked different. At that time, it was said that Apple TV and HomePod mini were slated for release in the fall, while the home hub was an exception – a window from October to early 2027 was mentioned. This is exactly what we reported back then, when three smart home devices were on the verge of launch.
| Date | Status at the start of the home headquarters |
|---|---|
| October 2025 | Expected spring 2026 |
| March 2026 | Expected autumn 2026 |
| End of July 2026 | October 2026 to early 2027, behind Apple TV and HomePod mini |
| August 2026 | Store renovation suggests a joint start in autumn |
Both reports originate from the same source and are less than four weeks apart. The discrepancy remains unresolved: the July report was based on product plans, while the current one is derived from store planning. Both scenarios are possible – that the release date has been moved forward, or that stores are being prepared before the device is released.
What else is expected for autumn
For the new Apple TV, a redesigned Siri Remote is rumored alongside Siri AI, though it's not yet clear what the changes will be. On the system side, code in tvOS 27 recently hinted at Siri AI for the Apple TV 4K. For the HomePod mini, the focus is primarily on new wireless chips and support for the new assistant; the HomePod 3 and HomePod mini 2 overview summarizes the current status. The Apple TV 4K overview lists the known specifications for the set-top model itself.
Why a store renovation is not a deadline
This clue is stronger than the usual supplier rumor because it describes something physical. Shelf space is planned months in advance, staff are trained, and demonstration units are ordered. Anyone who goes to this much trouble is expecting stock.
Nevertheless, it remains an inference – not from Apple, but from the scope of the work. A remodeled wall doesn't imply a date. It says nothing about whether the device will be unveiled in September and sold in October, whether it will even appear on stage, and certainly nothing about the order of the markets. If you're waiting for the Home Hub, the reliable date remains the keynote, not the store construction – and preparations for the September event are already underway.
