iOS 27 Beta 7: The home stretch before release

Apple has released the seventh beta of iOS 27 for developers. So late in the cycle, the feature set is essentially frozen – any changes made now are bug fixes. This clarifies which iPhone update Germany can expect in September and what will be missing.

Since its launch at WWDC in June, iOS 27 beta versions have been released every two weeks, most recently with the new features of the fourth beta. With the seventh beta, the cycle reaches the point where Apple traditionally refrains from making any fundamental changes. For major iOS generations, this is usually followed by an eighth beta before the release candidate concludes the cycle.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Apple has released iOS 27 Beta 7 for developers; the public beta usually follows shortly after.
  • So late in the cycle, the range of functions is practically fixed – only bug fixes are incorporated.
  • Major iOS generations have so far always ended with the eighth beta – only after that does the release candidate follow.
  • Siri AI is blocked on iPhone and iPad in the EU by the Digital Markets Act – Switzerland is exempt as a non-EU country.
  • The public release is planned for September, along with the new iPhones.

What Apple is still changing – and what it isn't

In the final beta rounds before a release, the focus shifts almost entirely to bug fixing and stability. New features practically never appear; anything that hasn't been included in a beta version up to this point will, based on experience, only appear in one of the point updates after launch. For developers, this is the moment to test their apps against a version that is very close to the final release. Apple details the specific fixes included in each test version in the official iOS 27 release notes.

The three pillars of the update remain unchanged in terms of content: the completely revamped Siri AI assistant, an expansion of the parental control and screen time functions, and a broad optimization of speed and usability across the system.

How many more betas will follow?

The number of testing rounds for major iOS generations is remarkably consistent: iOS 13 through iOS 18 each had exactly eight developer betas, and iOS 26 also ended with its eighth round on August 25th last year. A ninth beta was last released in 2018 with iOS 12. Therefore, after beta 7, one more round is expected before Apple releases the final version.

The Release Candidate is the version that Apple considers complete and which, as a rule, becomes the public version unchanged. With iOS 18, it appeared after the September event, about a week before the general release. The same pattern is expected for iOS 27: Release Candidate around the time of the iPhone launch, public distribution shortly thereafter.

The DMA hook remains

For users in Germany and Austria, Beta 7 does not change the central limitation: Siri AI is blocked on iPhones and iPads in the EU due to the Digital Markets Act. Apple's restriction of the assistant here is due to the interoperability requirements of the DMA.

Switzerland is on the other side: it belongs neither to the EU nor the EEA and is not covered by the DMA – Siri AI is available there. Swiss users are therefore already testing the AI functions in beta, while they are left out for the time being in the EU.

Anyone who should still install the beta now

Even a late beta remains a test version, albeit a significantly quieter one than at the beginning of the cycle. Those who only have a few weeks to bridge until the final version gain little from installing it. Testing is still only worthwhile on a secondary device and only after a complete backup. Those without a developer account can access the test version via the public iOS 27 beta – the setup process, including backup and secondary device recommendations, is described there step by step.

A finished update with a known vulnerability

The fact that the cycle is entering its final stretch without major setbacks suggests a smooth launch. However, for German-speaking regions, this also clarifies what will be missing from the release: the feature set is finalized, and the DMA lock for Siri AI is included. iOS 27 will therefore arrive here as a complete update – minus the feature that Apple itself has highlighted. Anyone considering upgrading their iPhone for the AI features will find this beta confirmation that waiting isn't worthwhile for now.

iOS 27: Here's what's next

Following the established pattern, an eighth beta is expected before the September release, with the release candidate completing the cycle. The major features – Siri AI, the enhanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, and the refinements to Liquid Glass – are confirmed. The only remaining question is when EU users will receive the components currently unavailable to them.
