Almost a year after its launch in the US, Apple is finally selling its fastest compact power adapter in Germany as well. The 40W Dynamic Power Adapter is the same size as the familiar 20-watt adapter, but charges twice as fast – and its prongs fold away for easy transport.
On the day of the new desktop Macs, Apple also added a second, significantly smaller product to its European store: the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with a 60W max output. The power adapter has been available in the US since September 2025, with a version featuring a UK plug following in November. Now, the variant with the two-prong European plug, standard in Europe, is also available. What the power supply can do
The name describes the principle: 40 watts is the continuous output; the adapter can briefly deliver up to 60 watts to accelerate the charging process. It doesn't maintain these peak wattages continuously, but only during periods when the connected device can utilize them.
The casing is the same size as the 20-watt power adapter that many will remember from previous iPhone packaging. This means it offers twice the continuous power output without increasing the size of the plug. The two contact pins retract into the casing for transport – a practical feature for anyone putting the power adapter in a bag where protruding pins would otherwise get caught.
The adapter offers accelerated charging for iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPad Pro models.
Who can buy it
The Type C variant is now available in several European markets, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It is also available in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Turkey, as well as in Vietnam outside of Europe.
In Germany, the power adapter costs 45 euros. It is only available directly from Apple; a cable is not included.
The fact that Switzerland is included is not a given: They use type J sockets, which can accommodate the two-pin Europlug.
Eleven months until the version with Europlug
The timeframe is the truly striking detail in this report. Apple introduced the power adapter in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17, initially only with a US plug. The UK version followed in November. Almost a year passed before the version with the two-prong European plug was released.
For an accessory without a radio module and without any regulatory peculiarities, that's a long time. The reason for this is unknown, and Apple usually doesn't give one.
Anyone who previously used a third-party power adapter because the appropriate Apple model simply didn't exist can now find an alternative in the store – though with a similar design, it's rarely at a lower price.
An accessories launch with a forward-looking perspective
The timing warrants a second look. The power adapter appears on the same day as the Mac announcements, even though it has little to do with Macs – the new desktops are powered via a fixed power cable. Its target audience is iPhone and iPad users.
The other date is much closer: Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone generation in a few weeks. From this perspective, having a fast, compact power adapter in stock before millions of new devices hit the shelves makes more sense than any connection to the Mac. It's our assessment that this is precisely why the European launch is happening now – although such a connection hasn't been officially confirmed.
A latecomer that's worth it
A power adapter alone isn't exactly groundbreaking news. However, in this case, the combination of double the power output in the same size and foldable pins makes it one of the more practical accessories in Apple's lineup – especially for travel. The fact that it took so long to arrive in this country remains a disappointment.
