The iPhone 17e is already considered one of the most exciting candidates for Apple's next product generation months before its possible launch. After the iPhone 16e was introduced as the affordable model in the iPhone 16 series and replaced the SE series, all eyes are now on its successor. The question is when the iPhone 17e will be released, what specifications can be expected, and what design decisions Apple might make this time.

With the iPhone 16e, Apple filled a clear gap in its product lineup with the launch of the iPhone 16 in early 2025: a more affordable device that still boasts the latest hardware. Priced at €699, it was released well after the Pro and standard versions of the iPhone 16 series and also marked the end of the iPhone SE line. The iPhone 17 series is now on the market, which automatically shifts the focus to the next affordable model. Analysts and insiders agree that an iPhone 17e is coming—the only question is when and with what features.

The release schedule

Several sources point to a 2026 release of the iPhone 17e. Industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo stated in May that Apple will unveil the device in the first half of the year, as part of a new annual update strategy for the lower-priced iPhone. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also spoke of an early 2026 launch. As early as April, it was reported that the iPhone 17e was nearing test production. However, the corresponding indication was more likely to suggest a May 2026 launch, similar to the iPhone 16e, which also appeared later in the series.

The display

The South Korean news agency The Elec reported that Apple will use the same OLED panel for the iPhone 17e that was already installed in the iPhone 16e. This panel originally came from the iPhone 14 and allows for cost-effective production on existing production lines. The Super Retina XDR OLED display offers a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, deeper blacks, brighter whites, and a typical maximum brightness of 800 nits. For HDR content, the peak brightness increases to up to 1200 nits. The resolution is 2532 x 1170 pixels with 460 ppi, slightly below the resolution of the iPhone 16 display, which offers 2556 x 1179 pixels.

The processor

The new A19 chip is said to be used inside, the same processor found in the standard iPhone 17 models. The chip is based on an advanced 3-nanometer process and features a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, as well as a 5-core GPU. It also features an updated display engine, a new image signal processor, and a 16-core neural engine. Each GPU core is equipped with a neural accelerator, accelerating the execution of local AI models—for example, Siri on the device. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing delivers console-quality gaming with higher frame rates and better effects. At the same time, the increased efficiency ensures longer battery life.

Dynamic Island or Notch

While the iPhone 16e still featured the classic notch, there are indications that the iPhone 17e could feature a dynamic island and a new design. According to leaker "Digital Chat Station," Apple will replace the notch with a dynamic island, similar to what was already standard on the iPhone 15. Since the iPhone 16e was based on the design of the iPhone 14, it's conceivable that the iPhone 17e will build on the design of the iPhone 15—with a rounded bezel and a more modern look. However, this assumption contradicts reports of the reused OLED panel. Whether Apple will truly modernize the look or stick with the familiar notch design remains unclear.

Apple will separate Pro and budget models more clearly in the future

In the long term, Apple appears to be firmly integrating the affordable iPhone series into its annual cycle. An iPhone 18e is already expected for 2027, launching alongside the standard iPhone 18 model – albeit six months after the Pro models. This would split Apple's product launches and give the lower-priced model its own launch date in the spring. The iPhone 17e would thus be part of a new strategy that more clearly separates the iPhone life cycles.

iPhone 17e: Apple's next budget model

The iPhone 17e could be released in early 2026 and will most likely be positioned as the lower-priced model in the series. A proven OLED display, the new A19 chip, possible design tweaks, and improved battery life point to an attractive device priced below the standard models. Much is still uncertain, but rumors paint a clear picture: The iPhone 17e will be Apple's next-generation budget iPhone—with the latest technology, but at a more affordable price.
