In November, Apple officially introduced the first Mac devices with its own Apple Silicon chip – the M1 processor. The first models include a MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro and a Mac mini. However, there are a number of other models that are still pending.
There have been rumors for a long time that Apple wants to turn its back on chip manufacturer Intel. Apple itself confirmed at WWDC 2020 that it wants to switch the entire Mac range to Apple Silicon processors over the next two years. The first step was two MacBooks and a Mac mini. For this reason, 2021 and 2022 should be particularly interesting for Mac users.
A new iMac
One of the most popular and anticipated Macs is the iMac. There have been countless rumors. The device received its most recent upgrade in August 2020, but it once again relied on Intel and the old design. The chassis was last revised in 2012 - so a redesign of the iMac is long overdue. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already reported several times that Apple will introduce a redesigned iMac with a 24-inch display sometime in Q4 2020 or Q1 2021. Now that Apple's November event was held without any new iMac models, it seems very likely that the redesigned iMac with Apple silicon will launch in Q1 2021.
The interesting thing is that this 24-inch model is supposed to replace the 21-inch device. This is made possible by the almost edgeless display, which is reportedly modeled on the iPad Pro. However, it is not known whether a successor to the 27-inch device will follow. This means that Apple could also introduce such a model much later.
New MacBook Pro models
In addition to a new iMac, new MacBook Pro models are also expected. Although the company has already introduced a 13-inch device, two more are expected. Rumors that Apple is working on a 14-inch model are not new. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, this version should be released in the third or fourth quarter of 2021. A new 16-inch model is also expected. But that's not all. According to various reports, the devices will appear in a completely new design. However, no concrete details have been given - at least not yet.
An updated Mac Pro
Apple introduced a brand new Mac Pro in 2019. But Bloomberg has already claimed that Apple is working on a new version. According to the report, the device is expected to be smaller. Since the Mac Pro is very modular and reports about its development are rare, it is difficult to predict what exactly we can expect. It remains unclear what changes can be expected in addition to the integration of an Apple Silicon processor.
Another Mac mini?
The current M1 Mac mini suffers from similar limitations as the 13-inch MacBook Pro and can accommodate a maximum of 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage space. The Thunderbolt ports also leave a lot to be desired. For this reason, observers expect Apple to follow suit. This means that a new Mac mini could of course arrive sooner than expected.
Will Apple introduce more Mac devices with Intel chips?
So we can look forward to many interesting Mac devices with Apple Silicon processors. But will Apple introduce other Intel versions in addition to its own chip?
