iPhone 14 Pro: How to disable Always-On Display

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have an always-on display, which means your device is dimly lit even when it's asleep, showing the date and time, your lock screen wallpaper, and notifications. However, some people don't want to use the feature, so I'll show you how to disable it.

The Always-On Display uses a new display technology that runs the screen in a power-saving mode that updates the screen only once per second and reduces the screen brightness. Similar to Apple Watch, this allows the screen to stay on even when the iPhone is asleep. In Power Save mode, your iPhone displays your lock screen with your colorful wallpaper, widgets, new notifications, and the current date and time. You can tap the screen at any time or use the Wake feature to bring your iPhone back to full brightness. Sensitive data is not displayed in this Always-On mode.

How to turn off and disable iPhone 14 Pro Always-On Display?

Some people don't like the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) feature or find it distracting. If you don't want to use the Always-On Display, you can turn it off permanently.

Open Settings on your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Tap Display & brightness.
Scroll down to find the “Always on” setting.
Tap the switch to turn it off. Tap it again to turn it back on.

If you don't want to keep the display on all night, you can use sleep mode.

There are also some other cases where the system will temporarily disable the Always On function. That means the device can control the mode intelligently.

When does the Always-On Display turn off automatically?

Under certain circumstances, the iPhone 14 Pro will automatically turn off the Always-On feature if it thinks you don't need it. If you put your iPhone 14 Pro face down on the table or it detects that it's been put in your pocket, the display will go black to save battery (since you can't see the display anyway). If you wear an Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 Pro's screen will also turn off completely if your phone detects that your watch has moved far away from it.

If you use system sleep mode with Sleep Focus, the Always-On features will also be disabled. This means that the iPhone will not glow brightly at night when you are sleeping. If you use Low Power Mode, the Always-On feature will also be disabled. Even though Always-On Mode is power-efficient, it still uses some battery life and Low Power Mode does everything it can to save juice. With normal use, you should expect your iPhone 14 Pro to last about the same as your previous iPhone even with the Always-On display enabled. For power-saving efficiency, your iPhone will also turn off the Always-On display if you haven't used it for a long time. So if you keep it in a drawer for a long time, the Always-On display will turn off after a while - according to Apple.

Can I customize the always-on lock screen?

At launch, there is no way to change the way your iPhone looks in Always-on mode. It mirrors the state of your current lock screen, which is the same as when your device is awake, just in a significantly dimmed state. Photos of people are specifically darkened to preserve skin tone details. However, there is no feature that lets you choose a minimalist, black-and-white lock screen, for example.
