Apple today released a new support document with additional details about the new Always-On Display mode on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The new document lists eight scenarios in which the Always-on display temporarily turns off. To save battery life, Apple says the display turns off completely when:
- your iPhone is face down
- your iPhone is in your pocket
- sleep mode is activated
- the power saving mode is activated
- your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
- you use the Continuity Camera
- you haven't used your iPhone for a while
- your iPhone detects that you have moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch.
According to Apple, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can learn your "activity patterns" and turn the Always-On display on and off accordingly. According to Apple, the display can, for example, work with the user's alarm clock or sleep schedule if they have one set. Always-On Display mode is enabled by default. To disable it, open the Settings app, tap the Display & Brightness menu, and turn off Always On.
iPhone 14 Pro with always-on display
On the iPhone 14 Pro models, the refresh rate can be lowered to as low as 1 Hz to ensure the new feature doesn't have too much of an impact on battery life. Apple says the Always-On Display uses multiple coprocessors in the A16 Bionic chip to refresh the display with "minimal power consumption," making the display "incredibly power efficient." Always-On Display mode hides the entire lock screen but still shows information such as the time, widgets, and wallpaper. As soon as you pick up the iPhone, tap the screen, or press the side button, the display returns to normal brightness.
