WhatsApp discontinues support for older iPhone models

WhatsApp has implemented a major change that affects many iPhone users. As of June 1, 2025, the app will no longer be supported on devices running iOS versions below 15.1. The messaging service WhatsApp is a part of everyday life for many. Whether for private conversations, group chats, or voice messages, the app has become an indispensable part of modern communication. But with every technological advancement, system requirements also increase. Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, has decided to no longer support older iOS versions. This means that several iPhone models will no longer be compatible with the app. The decision was originally announced for the beginning of May, but has been postponed to June 1st.

These iPhone models are no longer compatible with WhatsApp

All devices that do not support at least iOS 15.1 are affected. Specifically, these include:

iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus

These iPhones cannot be updated to a higher iOS version. Therefore, WhatsApp will no longer work on these devices. The app may still be installed, but it can no longer be launched or connected to the server.

Why WhatsApp is discontinuing support

The reasons for the end of support are technical. New features and security updates require modern operating systems. Older iOS versions no longer provide the necessary foundation to reliably implement current standards—such as end-to-end encryption or multi-device support. Therefore, it makes sense for Meta to discontinue support for outdated devices.

What you can do now

If you use one of the affected iPhones, you have two options.

First, you can upgrade to a newer iPhone. To avoid losing your previous chats and media, you should create a backup via iCloud before switching. You can find all the information you need in the WhatsApp Help Center.
Second, you can continue using WhatsApp via the browser – via web.whatsapp.com. However, WhatsApp must be active on another device beforehand. This option is more of a workaround, as many app features, such as push notifications or camera access, are missing.

WhatsApp comes to the iPad

Parallel to the transition, there is also a positive development. WhatsApp is now officially available on the iPad – via its own app. More than 15 years after the service's launch, a frequently expressed user request has been fulfilled. The iPad app functions similarly to the desktop version and also supports multi-device use. Additionally, it has been confirmed that an Instagram app for the iPad is in the works – another step toward better serving the Apple ecosystem.

WhatsApp no longer works – what you need to do now

If you're using an iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus, you can no longer use WhatsApp effective immediately – unless you upgrade to a newer device. This change affects all users still using iOS 12 or earlier. Anyone who wants to continue communicating securely and seamlessly with WhatsApp should act promptly.
