WhatsApp is working on a feature that many users have been missing for a long time: usernames. Instead of sharing your phone number, you'll soon be able to simply assign a name that others can use to find and contact you. This will not only provide more convenience, but also, and most importantly, more privacy protection. The whole thing hasn't officially launched yet, but the new feature has already appeared in beta versions.
WhatsApp is one of the most used messaging services worldwide. This makes it all the more important that the app constantly evolves and adapts to the needs of its users. The next big step concerns precisely this: The introduction of usernames is intended to ensure that you no longer have to share your phone number to contact someone or be reachable. This is especially useful when making new contacts without immediately disclosing your private data.
WhatsApp is testing the username feature
The feature was discovered by WABetaInfo . A TestFlight beta for iOS revealed evidence that WhatsApp is working on a username UI. The feature isn't yet live—not even for testers—but the corresponding code strings are already available. This is a clear sign that development is actively underway and initial testing is imminent.
How do WhatsApp usernames work?
The idea is simple: Every user should be able to choose a unique username. This name can then be used to contact others – without revealing a phone number. So, anyone contacting you for the first time will only see your username. To keep everything consistent, there are strict rules for creating a name:
- The username must not begin with "www." This is to prevent it from looking like a web address.
- It must contain at least one letter. Numbers or special characters are not allowed.
- Valid characters are lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods, and underscores.
Once you've chosen a valid username, WhatsApp will show you a small animation with confetti to confirm. After that, your name will appear in chats and groups instead of your phone number.
Changes are made transparent
If you change your username later, it will automatically be displayed as a notification in your chats—similar to a new profile picture or phone number. This way, your contacts will know immediately.
Check availability – soon also on the web
WhatsApp is also working on a way to check whether a desired username is still available via the web version of the app. This allows you to test in advance whether your preferred name is available – similar to email addresses or social media profiles.
When will the feature be available?
There's no exact launch date yet. However, the fact that the feature is already appearing in the latest beta versions suggests it's not far off. The rollout could occur with one of the next updates. The release of the official iPad version of WhatsApp also shows that the company is currently preparing many innovations at once.
