iPad users had to wait a long time. While WhatsApp has long been standard on smartphones, there was no native app for the iPad until now. Anyone wanting to send messages on the tablet had to resort to WhatsApp Web or third-party solutions. Now that's changed. WhatsApp is now officially available in the App Store for the iPad.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has so far held back on developing its own iPad apps. Well-known applications like Instagram are still not available for the iPad, despite regular user requests. WhatsApp is changing that. The current version, 25.16.81, brings a native app for Apple's tablet for the first time – and without much fanfare. The iPad app isn't even mentioned in the official release notes for the new version. Nevertheless, it's there, fully functional, and available directly from the App Store. This brings to an end a years-long phase in which Meta largely ignored the iPad – at least in the messaging area.
Two-column layout for better overview
The new iPad app is optimized for the larger display. It displays the chat list on the left and the currently open chat on the right. This layout is clearer than on the iPhone and makes it easier to quickly switch between conversations. The view is reminiscent of familiar iPad apps like Mail or Messages.
Multitasking included: Split View, Slide Over and Picture in Picture
The app supports all the important multitasking features of iPadOS. You can run WhatsApp in Split View mode alongside another app, such as Safari or Notes. Slide Over also works, allowing you to temporarily overlay the app on top of another. Particularly interesting: Picture-in-Picture support allows you to continue watching content such as videos in a small window while chatting simultaneously. This makes WhatsApp significantly more flexible to use—for example, when working, researching, or streaming on the iPad.
Functionality corresponds to the smartphone version
In terms of content, WhatsApp on the iPad differs little from the iPhone version. You can write messages, send voice messages, share pictures and videos, and post status updates as usual. Group features, calls, and end-to-end encryption are also included. The iPad app functions as a companion app, meaning you still need a smartphone with WhatsApp, which you can pair your iPad with via QR code. A separate phone number or SIM card is not necessary. Once set up, all chats sync automatically.
WhatsApp for the iPad: A logical step with many benefits
With WhatsApp for the iPad, Meta closes an obvious gap. The implementation is successful; the app is stable and integrates well into the iPad workflow. Even though Meta isn't actively promoting this move yet, the new version should represent a clear improvement for many iPad users. Those who regularly work on the iPad or use the tablet as a second device will benefit from the larger screen, the better overview, and the practical multitasking features.
