Adam Scott gave an update on the third season of Severance at the BAFTA Television Awards. The most important point: the wait will be significantly shorter this time than the three years between seasons 1 and 2. Filming will begin "very soon."

Severance is one of Apple TV's most influential original productions and, after its second season, is officially the most-watched series on the service. This is precisely why the question of a third season has been circulating for months – especially since the three-year gap between the first two seasons frustrated many fans. Adam Scott's recent statements now provide the first somewhat concrete indication of the release window. They come immediately after Apple TV's historic awards weekend, in which The Studio won the BAFTA Television Award, making it the most awarded series of the year.

What Adam Scott said on the red carpet

Adam Scott was at the BAFTA Television Awards in London over the weekend and spoke with Deadline. His key takeaway: Severance season 3 will begin filming "very soon". When asked if fans would have to wait less time this time than the three years between seasons 1 and 2, Scott gave a two-part answer.

First came the obligatory caveat: it was more important that the series be good than that it be released quickly. Then, however, came the real news. They definitely planned to release the season much earlier than the last one – three years had simply been too long.

This marks the first time a lead actor directly involved on set has officially confirmed that the team is internally working towards a shorter gap between episodes. Previously, similar signals had only come from Ben Stiller and Apple TV programming chief Matt Cherniss, but without this explicit "much sooner."

What "much sooner" could specifically mean

Season 2 of Severance premiered in January 2025. Simply carrying over the existing gap would result in a release in January 2028. This is precisely the scenario Scott clearly wants to avoid.

A realistic timeframe would be shortened by at least six months, meaning a premiere around mid-2027. An earlier release than spring 2027 is unlikely – filming is only just beginning, and a series with the visual style, sound design, and visual density of Severance requires a correspondingly long post-production period. Six to nine months of post-production is a realistic minimum.

A realistic window thus emerges between mid-2027 and autumn 2027. This would reduce the gap between seasons for Apple TV to around two and a half years – shorter than the three years of the last season, but still long by industry standards for a prestige series.

Why Apple is increasing the pressure on production

Behind Scott's statement lies a solid strategic foundation. In February 2026, Apple decided to acquire the full rights to Severance, reportedly paying Fifth Season around $70 million for them. The series now belongs entirely to Apple Studios. Apple wanted to avoid relying on an external studio in the future to handle the very production dynamics that led to the three-year gap between seasons 1 and 2 – delayed tax refunds, interest charges, and pre-financing bottlenecks.

Full control gives Apple the ability to plan production cycles more efficiently. This is the first test for Severance Season 3. If Apple manages to visibly reduce the gap without sacrificing quality, the change of ownership would already be justified both economically and strategically.

The bigger picture: Severance as a platform anchor

Severance is to Apple TV what Game of Thrones was to HBO: the series that resonates with the brand beyond its existing subscriber base. Along with the recent wave of awards for The Studio, Pluribus, and Slow Horses, Apple is building a prestigious portfolio that positions the service as a premium offering against Netflix, HBO, and Disney+.

Too long a gap between Severance seasons dilutes precisely this positioning effect. Those who started Severance three years ago and are now expecting season 3 don't want to be told to wait until 2028 again. Adam Scott's clear statement – "much sooner" – is therefore both a reassurance for the fanbase and an implicit commitment from Apple to more closely nurturing its key brand.

Severance remains the most important test for Apple's own production

Apple TV will only announce specific release dates once post-production and streaming strategy are finalized. Until then, statements from the cast are the most reliable source. What makes this project different is that, for the first time, the production is entirely in-house, and a leading actor has publicly stated that the three-year wait was too long. No further commitments have been made before filming began. (Image: Apple)
