The time has come – Samsung has announced the official launch date for its Galaxy Fold. The price in this country is also now known.
Samsung announced the official launch date for its foldable smartphone Galaxy Fold this morning. The device will be officially available from September 18th - in Germany the Samsung Galaxy Fold will cost around 2,100 euros. Curiously, the press release gives the impression that this is a completely new device. Will Samsung succeed on its second attempt? The device was originally supposed to debut almost six months ago, but numerous display problems forced the company to withdraw. The first test devices failed in droves - the reports caused a lot of ridicule around the world. But now all of that is said to be a thing of the past - the folding mechanism has been revised and the device is now ready for the market. According to Samsung, the revised Galaxy Fold now has a special protective film that is supposed to protect the entire display from the ingress of dirt particles - and this can no longer be removed manually. Special reinforcements were added to the upper and lower hinges as part of the revision and are intended to keep particles out of sensitive areas, while additional metal layers under the Infinity Flex Display help to strengthen the mechanism.
Available in selected countries with 5G
In addition, the distance between the hinge and the device chassis has been reduced. The optimizations are intended to help prevent display problems. The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a 4.6" external display - if the smartphone is opened, the user can enjoy a total of 7.3" OLED screen. Inside there is a processor with eight cores - a whopping 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage capacity.
The device will also be 5G compatible in select countries. Samsung's new "Folder" will be available in Cosmos Black and Space Silver. Given the high price of around €2,100 and its history, the customer base will most likely remain small. Whether Samsung has succeeded in redesigning the device remains to be seen. (Image: Samsung)
