Pluribus: Gilligan plans at least three seasons

Work on season 2 has reached a crucial point: the plot is finalized, and filming is scheduled to begin in a few weeks. At the same time, the series creator reveals the overall length of the story – and immediately qualifies his statement.

Pluribus quickly became the biggest hit in Apple TV's catalog after its launch in November 2025. Now, there's an update on the second season, directly from the show's creator. Vince Gilligan spoke about the production progress in a podcast and made a remark that extends beyond the current season. This adds two new points to the current production status of season 2.

What the series creator said

The statements come from the Deadline podcast Crew Call, in which Gilligan appeared alongside composer Dave Porter. In the discussion about the series, he reports that the writing team has just finished the plot for the second season and will begin filming in one to two months.

The technical term for this is "breaking the story": the phase in which a team of writers establishes the plot arc of a season scene by scene before the actual scripts are written. It is considered the most time-consuming part of the preparation – its completion makes the announced start of filming plausible.

The date the interview was recorded is not documented. The time given could therefore mean that the cameras were already rolling in September. This confirms what has been rumored since spring: the plan to start filming in autumn 2026 remains in place.

Three seasons, maybe four – with one caveat

A more revealing aside, Gilligan states that he plans to run Pluribus for at least three, possibly four seasons. For a series whose first season aired just nine months ago, that's an unusually concrete outlook.

However, he himself puts it into perspective. He also originally planned for only a few seasons of Breaking Bad, but in the end, there were significantly more. The number is therefore a statement of intent and not a firm commitment – either for the number of seasons or the number of seasons.

Nevertheless, the statement is valuable for Apple. A format with a foreseeable multi-year lifespan binds subscribers for years, and that's precisely what the service has lacked in the past: successful titles expired without a successor in sight.

The start date remains open

When asked about a release date, Gilligan dodges the question. Asked whether he still expects it to air by the end of 2027, he jokingly replies, "Sometime in the 21st century." The question itself is noteworthy: it presupposes a timeline that Gilligan has never publicly stated.

Mathematically, the assumption isn't unreasonable. With a filming time of approximately six months plus post-production, a late autumn 2027 release would be conceivable – especially since Apple would likely prefer to release the second season around the same time of year as the first. We therefore expect a release in November 2027, but we must emphasize: nothing is confirmed, and Gilligan has deliberately refrained from committing to a specific date.

A two-year break for spectators in this country

For subscribers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this means one thing above all: a long gap. Season 1 aired here from November 7, 2025, simultaneously with the US; a start of the sequel in autumn 2027 would be about two years later.

The subscription still costs €9.99 per month in Germany, while Apple has already raised the price in the US. With a break of this length, it's worth considering your own usage: those who primarily subscribe for individual series can easily end up paying over €100 for additional content between seasons. Canceling and resubscribing at the start of the new season remains possible at any time, and the entire series will then be available to catch up on.

What happens next with the series?

The next reliable indicator will likely be the official start of production, which Apple usually accompanies with a brief announcement.
