OpenAI develops desktop super app for macOS

OpenAI is working on a fundamental realignment of its app strategy. The goal is to consolidate several existing applications into a central desktop solution for macOS. This planned "super app" is intended to simplify usage, streamline internal processes, and accelerate the further development of AI capabilities. This is based on internal considerations as well as confirmed information from company sources.

To date, OpenAI has pursued an approach with several independent applications. These include the ChatGPT app, the Codex programming platform, and the Atlas browser. Each of these solutions serves a specific purpose, but parallel development has led to increasing fragmentation.

According to an internal memo from Fidji Simo, head of application development at OpenAI, resources were spread across too many apps and technical structures. This fragmentation slowed development and made it difficult to achieve the desired product quality. The planned consolidation is a direct response to these problems.

Merging of ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas

The core of the new strategy is the development of a desktop "super app" that combines several existing OpenAI products. Specifically, the following applications will be integrated:

ChatGPT (for generative AI and communication)
Codex (for programming and developer tasks)
Atlas (browser-based functions)

This consolidation creates a unified platform that covers various application areas. Switching between individual tools is eliminated, resulting in more consistent workflows.

Confirmation by OpenAI and internal leadership

The plans were not only discussed internally but also officially confirmed. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to the Wall Street Journal the ongoing efforts to unify the applications.

The implementation is being led by Fidji Simo. In her internal memo, she clearly describes the initial situation: Too many parallel developments and technical stacks have reduced efficiency. The new strategy is intended to solve precisely this problem.

Goal: Less fragmentation, more quality

A key problem with the previous structure was fragmentation. Multiple separate apps led to:

This extension serves as a foundation before further components are integrated into the super app.

Integration of ChatGPT and Atlas

Following the expansion of Codex, ChatGPT and the Atlas browser will also become part of the new platform. This will create a comprehensive application that combines various AI functions in a single interface.

The mobile version of ChatGPT remains unaffected by these changes and will continue to exist separately.

Focus on teams and business customers

Another goal of the super app is to focus more strongly on businesses and teams. OpenAI wants to design the application in such a way that it supports collaborative work and integrates better into existing workflows.

By bundling the functions, the app becomes a tool suitable for both developers and productive teamwork.
