Google is working on a native Gemini app for macOS to significantly simplify the use of its AI and catch up with ChatGPT and Claude. Until now, Gemini on the Mac was only available via the browser, which was considered a disadvantage.

While competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic already offer their own desktop apps, Google is now following suit. The new solution is intended to be better integrated into the system and make it more user-friendly overall.

Development and current status

According to Bloomberg, the Google Gemini app for Mac is currently in development. An initial version has already been distributed to beta testers to gather feedback. This version currently only includes basic features; more are planned. A release date has not yet been announced.

Features of the Google Gemini app

Even in the testing phase, the app offers several key features:

  • Internet search within the app
  • Analysis of uploaded documents
  • Chat storage
  • Creation of images, tables and diagrams
  • Support for video and music generation
  • Processing mathematical tasks
  • Analysis of information

Google specifically asks testers for feedback on these areas.

Desktop Intelligence as a central feature

An important component is "Desktop Intelligence". This feature allows Gemini to recognize content on the screen and interact with other apps.

When enabled, the AI can use the screen context to personalize results and simplify tasks. According to the description, this only happens when the application is actively being used.

Competition and Outlook

With this new app, Google is responding to ChatGPT and Claude, which already offer native Mac applications. At the same time, Apple is planning its own Siri chatbot with iOS 27 and macOS 27, which will be based on a Google AI model.

Google is increasingly focusing on AI for desktop computers

The planned Gemini app demonstrates that Google is further expanding its AI offerings and focusing more on desktop use. Even without a concrete launch date, it's clear that Google wants to catch up with other AI providers and play a larger role in the long term. (Image: Shutterstock / arda savasciogullari)
