Apple Home Devices Manager Moves to Oura

Brian Lynch is leaving Apple and joining Oura

Brian Lynch, who has served as Senior Director for Apple's home devices since 2022, is leaving the company. He is taking on the role of Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at smart ring manufacturer Oura. The information was confirmed by Oura CEO Tom Hale (via Bloomberg).

Lynch was responsible for the hardware development of new smart home devices at Apple. However, his experience extends much further: He previously worked on the self-driving car project and was also involved in the development of several iPod models.

Setback for Apple's smart home initiative

Lynch's departure comes at an inopportune time. Apple's smart home division is already struggling with delays to a key product.

The planned smart display was originally slated for release last year, but has been postponed several times. A market launch is currently expected no earlier than September.

A key reason for this is the overhaul of Siri. The voice assistant is intended to be able to process personalized data more effectively and transfer it to the device. These adjustments are technically complex and are delaying completion.

Further departures and current team structure

Lynch is not the first high-ranking manager to leave the home team. Back in 2024, DJ Novotney, Vice President of Program Management for the home hardware group, also departed.

This means Apple is losing two key executives in this area within a short period of time.

The smart home team is currently led by Matt Costello, who is also responsible for audio development and Beats products. The team reports to John Ternus, who, according to reports, plays a central role in the smart home efforts and considers this area important for Apple's future growth.
