The MacBook Neo is the focus of an unusual hardware experiment. YouTuber DirectorFeng demonstrates in an ASMR video how to manually expand the built-in storage of an Apple device. Specifically, a 256 GB model is successfully upgraded to 1 TB.

DirectorFeng is known for such projects. He had previously attempted to expand the storage of an iPhone 17 Pro Max to 2 TB. However, this project failed due to NAND compatibility issues. The video about it still garnered a lot of attention.

With the MacBook Neo, he has now managed a working upgrade, even if the process remains complex.

MacBook Neo storage upgrade overview

The MacBook Neo has soldered-in memory that is normally not replaceable. This is precisely where the modification comes in.

First, the device is completely disassembled and the mainboard removed. Then, DirectorFeng desolders the original 256GB NAND chip, cleans the contact surfaces, and replaces it with a 1TB chip.

After assembly, the software side is addressed: Using a second Mac, the device is restored in DFU mode. Only then does the system correctly recognize the new storage. Finally, 1 TB is displayed in the settings.

ASMR video and further information

The entire project is presented as a calm ASMR video, without a classic explanation, but with a focus on sounds and details of the work steps.

The comments also mention that another YouTuber, Yang Changshun, supposedly performed a similar upgrade in a livestream. However, the video is not publicly available.

Risks

The procedure is technically demanding and involves risks. Soldering errors or incompatible chips can render the device unusable. Furthermore, the warranty is usually voided.

MacBook Neo: Technically possible, practically almost impossible to implement

The MacBook Neo demonstrates in this example that even soldered memory is theoretically replaceable. However, the process is complex and remains a task for experienced specialists. For most users, this is more of a technical insight than a realistic option.
