With the iPhone 17 series, Apple is launching a new generation of smartphones. Initial pre-order numbers clearly show that demand has increased compared to the previous year. The premium models, in particular, are setting new standards. But while the Pro models dominate, the iPhone Air raises questions and generates mixed reviews.

The iPhone 17 models recently launched in four variants: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo has analyzed production figures and initial demand in a recent analysis. The results show that Apple has had a successful start with the classic and Pro models, while the market penetration of the iPhone Air remains unclear.

Strong pre-orders for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max

Demand for the iPhone 17 series is exceeding expectations. According to Kuo, around 25 percent more units were produced in the third quarter than for the iPhone 16 series in the same period last year. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is particularly notable: production is around 60 percent higher than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Longer delivery times also indicate that demand is noticeably higher than before. The iPhone 17 Pro and the standard model are also benefiting from this development, albeit to a lesser extent.

iPhone Air launches with question marks

While the other models sometimes have delivery times of several weeks, the iPhone Air is available immediately at launch. This could initially seem like a sign of weak demand. However, Kuo points out that production of the iPhone Air is estimated to be about three times higher than that of the iPhone 16 Plus last year. This improves availability, even if pre-orders don't create the same pressure as with the Pro models. Direct classification is difficult because there is no clear predecessor for the iPhone Air. Apple is repositioning it in the product range, somewhere between the regular model and the Pro versions. Kuo describes the device as "not particularly convincing on paper." Nevertheless, it could have a stronger impact in real-life comparisons in Apple Stores or at partners, thus attracting additional buyers.

Unclear future for the iPhone Air

Kuo's assessment makes it clear that many questions remain unanswered regarding the iPhone Air. On the one hand, the high production volume demonstrates Apple's confidence in the device. On the other hand, there is uncertainty as to whether it offers sufficient appeal to a broad buyer base. The decisive factors will be how the actual sales figures turn out in the coming months and whether the strategy of reaching an additional target audience with the Air works.

iPhone 17 exceeds expectations at launch

The iPhone 17 launched with demand that exceeded expectations and significantly surpassed the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 17 Pro Max, in particular, proved to be a success, while the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro also delivered solid sales. The iPhone Air, on the other hand, remains a special case. While it is available in large quantities, it still has to prove its long-term appeal to buyers. One thing is clear: Apple has had a successful start with the iPhone 17 series and exceeded expectations in the premium segment. (Image: Apple)
