Apple recently introduced the iPhone 15, which brings a significant change - the replacement of the familiar Lightning connector with USB-C. In this article, we will examine the impact of this decision on users and the environment.

The Lightning connector has been a staple of the iPhone family for years, but Apple has now decided to switch to USB-C. This change means the days of having to hunt for special, expensive Lightning cables are over. But how will this change affect users?

iPhone 15: EU forces Apple to switch to USB-C

USB-C is already widely used in the tech world and is used by most modern Android devices. The switch to this standard has clear advantages, as users can now use a standard cable to charge their various Apple devices and transfer data. This not only makes handling easier but also reduces the need for different cables and chargers. Another innovation is that Apple offers wired EarPods with USB-C to meet the needs of those who prefer to use wired headphones. The AirPods Pro 2 are also now available with a USB-C case.

However, it is worth noting that the entry-level AirPods and AirPods Max models still retain the Lightning connector for now. USB-C versions of these Products are expected to be available in early 2024. Interestingly, when Apple unveiled the iPhone 15, it failed to mention that the introduction of USB-C is also a response to an EU law that requires new phones in the European Union to have a universal USB-C charging port. The EU's intention is to reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste.

Conclusion

Overall, the switch to the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 means a simplification and standardization of charging and connection options for Apple users. The old Lightning cables are no longer needed, and you can now use the same cable for different devices. This is not only more convenient, but also more environmentally friendly, as the electronics industry moves to a unified standard to reduce its impact on the environment. Note, however, that you will need to purchase a USB-C charger separately if you don't already have one. (Image: Apple)
