The first beta of iOS 27 contains hints of an unusual feature: After particularly long conversations, Siri AI might suggest a break – explicitly reminding users that Siri is not a real person. Apple is thus responding to a concern that is troubling the entire AI industry.

With Siri AI, the assistant in iOS 27 becomes a fully-fledged conversational partner capable of engaging in lengthy dialogues. This raises a new question that goes beyond Siri AI's existing functions: How does a system handle users talking to an AI for extended periods? Code fragments from the first developer beta have now revealed evidence that Apple is preparing a concrete answer to this question.

What the code findings show

The code snippets shared by X user aaronp613 refer to a so-called "Take a Break Message." This message is intended to remind users that they have been in a conversation for an extended period of time - and that Siri is not a real person. According to the shared code, the reminder essentially reads: You have been in this conversation for several hours and should consider taking a break; Siri is not a person but will be ready to resume as soon as you wish.

More than just a screen time reminder

While traditional screen time tools primarily focus on pure usage time, Apple is apparently aiming for something else here: the risk of a parasocial bond with an AI. The planned warning explicitly frames Siri as a tool and not as a companion – a deliberate step that keeps the relationship between humans and AI objective.

Part of a debate across the entire industry

The concern about unhealthy usage patterns is currently a major concern for the entire AI industry. Both OpenAI and Google have begun equipping their chatbot products with appropriate safeguards. Anthropic has also observed that its chatbot Claude prompts users to adopt healthier habits after long sessions. Apple's potential break reminder would fit into this trend.

Much is still undecided

While Apple addressed several privacy and responsibility aspects surrounding Siri AI at the WWDC keynote, it omitted the topic of lengthy discussions. The existence of these code fragments suggests that the company is working on it behind the scenes. It remains unclear exactly when the reminder would be triggered – a fixed time threshold is not yet apparent in the code. Until official confirmation, the feature remains a discovery from the beta version that could just as easily disappear again. (Image: Apple)
