Connectivity Assist: What's new in iOS 27 Apfelpatient

Apple has renamed a familiar feature in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27: “Wi-Fi Assist” is now “Connectivity Assist.” The function remains the same—to keep the iPhone reliably online—but some observations suggest that there might be more to the new name than just cosmetic changes.

A stable internet connection is one of those features you only notice when it's missing. With the iOS 27, launched as a developer beta Apple has renamed the mechanism that ensures this. Connectivity Assist can be found in the Settings app under "Wi-Fi" and uses cellular data when the Wi-Fi connection is weak. While this initially appears to be a simple name change, it raises a question: Has the behavior also changed?

Wi-Fi Assist becomes Connectivity Assist

According to Apple's own description, the feature allows users to utilize mobile data in addition to Wi-Fi for a more reliable internet connection. A support document on Apple's website confirms that Connectivity Assist in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 is simply the new name for the feature previously known as Wi-Fi Assist. However, the document does not specify whether the renaming also entails any functional changes.

What the function has achieved so far – and what remains unclear

On iOS 26 and earlier, Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular data as soon as the Wi-Fi connection becomes too weak. In practice, this means a smoother transition, but depending on your mobile data plan, it can also increase your data usage, so it's worth checking the settings.

Some early beta testers suspect that Connectivity Assist could go a step further and, when actively used, provide both Wi-Fi and cellular data. This hasn't been confirmed yet. It is noteworthy, however, that several users on the iOS 27 beta received a new notification with the note "Intelligent Connectivity" as soon as the feature was active. It's therefore possible that the feature will intervene more aggressively in the future – but there's no definitive statement on this yet.

Seamless switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks

Regardless of the name change, Apple promises smoother network switching in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. The iPhone will seamlessly select the best available connection, whether Wi-Fi or cellular, so you stay connected - whether you're checking directions as you leave home or having a FaceTime call right after getting off a plane. Connectivity Assist fits into this goal of making everyday connectivity more reliable.

Small name change, bigger goal

The new name joins a whole series of connectivity features with which Apple has recently refined the interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular networks – including the innovations introduced with iOS 26, such as Captive Assist and Wi-Fi Aware.
