Apple released the release candidate versions of iOS 18.6 and the accompanying system updates this evening. Instead of a fourth beta, the manufacturer has now released the final test version before the final version is rolled out to all users. iPadOS 18.6, macOS 15.6, watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6 are now also available in their respective RC versions through the Apple Developer Program and the public beta program.
The so-called release candidate is usually identical to the final version, which Apple releases to all users a few days later. If no critical bugs arise at the last minute, this exact build will become the official version. The beta phase of iOS 18.6 and other versions is expected to end next week. The final rollout is expected to take place on Monday or Tuesday, based on Apple's usual schedule.
iOS 18.6 is a classic maintenance update
The new version isn't part of the upcoming major system generation, but rather closes the gap until the final release of iOS 26 in the fall. Accordingly, the focus of iOS 18.6 is on stability, bug fixes, and technical optimizations. Visible new features or design changes are not documented. Apple is using the update to refine existing processes and implement certain legal requirements.
New user experience for app installations in the EU
An important change affects users within the European Union. Apple has revised the app installation process outside of the App Store to comply with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Starting with iOS 18.6, users in the EU will be able to install apps and app marketplaces directly from the internet—that is, via third-party websites.
- A new two-step installation process is used: When downloading an app from a specific developer for the first time, iOS provides the user with detailed information about the publisher, app content, and security features. This disclosure is omitted for subsequent installations from the same developer, making the installation process much easier in the future. System notifications and warnings have also been revised to make the process more user-friendly – without compromising security mechanisms.
New API for alternative app sources
In addition, Apple has introduced a new application programming interface (API). This allows developers to initiate the download of apps from alternative sources directly from within their own apps. The prerequisite is that both the user and the app are registered within the EU. With this measure, Apple is laying the technical foundation for legally compliant and convenient app distribution outside of the App Store – but only in Europe.
Further changes not documented
Aside from the regulatory adjustments, no other visible changes have been announced in the RC version so far. Neither new features nor design changes have been documented. The update thus remains a classic interim release with a clear focus on system maintenance and legal implementation.
Final version coming soon
With the release of the Release Candidate, the end of the testing phase is within reach. The final version is expected to be released in a few days—presumably on July 28 or 29. Users can then upgrade to iOS 18.6 and subsequent updates via the regular software update. Those already participating in the public beta program have already installed the final version with the RC.
iOS 18.6 brings technical improvements and regulatory innovations
Even though iOS 18.6 doesn't offer any spectacular new features, it still marks an important step – especially for users within the EU. Easier access to alternative app sources demonstrates how Apple's system is continuing to open up under regulatory pressure.
