Apple continues to lose ground in the battle for the best minds in artificial intelligence. Just days after Ruoming Pang's move to Meta, two more key figures from Apple's AI department are following suit. Mark Lee and Tom Gunter are joining their former boss and moving to Meta's Superintelligence Labs team. This move not only demonstrates Meta's determination in AI, but also raises questions about the state of Apple's internal AI strategy.
Meta continues to selectively recruit key personnel from the AI sector – increasingly from Apple's ranks. The loss of three senior engineers within a very short period of time indicates that things aren't going well at Apple. Internal discussions, strategic ambiguities, and a deteriorating morale within the teams have clearly left their mark. Meta sees this as an opportunity that is being consistently seized.
Mark Lee and Tom Gunter move to Meta
Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, both formerly active in Apple's Foundation Models (AFM) group, have left the company. Both were considered close confidants of Ruoming Pang, who himself recently joined Meta with a generous compensation package - worth over $200 million according to Bloomberg. Lee was one of the first employees Pang brought onto his team at Apple. Gunter was one of the most experienced and respected engineers in the group. Lee has already left Apple and started his new position at Meta. After leaving Apple, Gunter initially worked briefly at another AI startup before also deciding to move to Menlo Park.
Meta seizes the moment – Apple loses its bearings
The three changes are not coincidences, but part of a larger development. Meta is deliberately expanding its Superintelligence Labs team with experienced staff – preferably those from competing companies. The recruitment offensive doesn't just affect Apple. Google and OpenAI have also poached talent several times in recent months. At Apple, however, the company is currently discussing its own AI strategy internally. It is still unclear whether Apple will rely on its own foundation models in the long term or whether it will integrate external partners – such as OpenAI – more closely into Siri and other services. This uncertainty appears to be affecting the working atmosphere. According to media reports, the mood in the AI teams is tense. Many employees feel blamed for glitches and setbacks in development. This impacts loyalty – and increases the willingness to leave.
Zuckerberg sets clear priorities
Mark Zuckerberg has publicly stated that AI is Meta's top priority. The targeted hiring of experienced professionals from the industry reflects this strategy. While Apple is still working on a clear direction, Meta is creating facts and building expertise in-house. Access to experienced engineers like Pang, Lee, and Gunter should significantly accelerate Meta's development of its own models.
