OpenAI has released a new feature for ChatGPT: the ChatGPT Agent. This is an agent-based model that can perform tasks independently. Unlike previous features, this one no longer simply answers questions but actively executes instructions – from research to code execution to the creation of entire documents. The new agent uses a virtual machine and can interact with external data sources and applications.
ChatGPT has long been more than just a chatbot. With the new agent mode, OpenAI is launching a system that thinks and acts independently, and takes over complex work processes. The ChatGPT agent combines existing tools from the ChatGPT environment and extends them with automation functions. The goal is to delegate routine tasks – precisely, scalably, and under control.
What the ChatGPT agent can do
The ChatGPT agent belongs to the o3 model series and combines several existing ChatGPT functions with extended agent capabilities. It performs research, creates reports, analyzes information, navigates the web, prompts for logins when needed, and displays summaries. It can also execute code directly from the terminal, create slides and tables, and access external data sources. Examples of tasks the agent can perform include:
- Check calendar entries and highlight relevant appointments based on current news
- Plan and shop online for ingredients for a Japanese breakfast for four people
- Conduct competitive analyses and summarize the results in a presentation
To ensure such tasks are executed properly, the agent uses its own virtual machine. It is programmed to request permission before each decisive action. Furthermore, tasks can be interrupted or stopped at any time to issue new instructions. This ensures transparency and control while simultaneously automating the process.
Use and availability
The ChatGPT agent is now available to paying users. Pro users will receive access first, followed by Plus and Team users over the next few days. Enterprise and Education users will receive access in the coming weeks. Activation takes place directly in the chat by selecting Agent Mode from the dropdown menu. Within a chat, you can switch between classic conversation and agent actions at any time. Usage is tiered:
- Pro users receive 400 messages per month
- Plus and Team users receive 40 messages per month
- Additional messages can be added via a flexible credit-based system
