Instagram denies reports of a major data leak

It is also noteworthy that Instagram did not publish this statement on its own platform or in threads, but via X. The post ended with a brief apology for the confusion caused.

Malwarebytes reports alleged data theft

At the same time, a completely different picture was circulating. The security firm Malwarebytes published a post on Bluesky on Friday. It showed a screenshot of an email, allegedly from Instagram, requesting a password reset.

Malwarebytes reported that cybercriminals had stolen sensitive data from approximately 17.5 million Instagram accounts. This included usernames, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and other personal information. According to Malwarebytes, this data is being sold on the dark web and could be misused for fraud, phishing, or other criminal activities.

These statements directly contradict Instagram's official explanations. The company has explicitly denied a confirmed data breach or hack of this magnitude.

Conflicting information and open questions

This case illustrates how differently security incidents can be assessed. While Malwarebytes speaks of a massive data breach, Instagram maintains that it was a limited technical issue without a security violation. So far, there is no publicly available evidence to prove an actual leak of user data from Instagram.

At the same time, the lack of transparency regarding the exact cause leaves room for doubt. The fact that external third parties were able to initiate password resets raises questions about the security of the relevant systems, even though Instagram claims no accounts were compromised.
