DuckDuckGo launches AI voice chat with a focus on privacy

DuckDuckGo is expanding its AI offerings with a new feature that significantly changes how artificial intelligence is used. With a free, encrypted, real-time AI voice chat on Duck.ai, speech becomes an integral part of search and work workflows. The focus is clearly on data privacy and voluntary use. DuckDuckGo thus remains true to its commitment to providing modern AI features without collecting or reusing personal data.

Back in March of last year, DuckDuckGo announced its own chatbot platform, Duck.ai. From the outset, the goal was to create a private way to search or communicate using large language models from external providers. Instead of training its own models, Duck.ai leverages LLM's leading AI labs and combines this with the strict privacy standards for which DuckDuckGo is known.

Throughout the year, Duck.ai was gradually expanded. This included, among other things, the introduction of an image generation function. The new speech mode now represents a further development, making the use of AI more natural and direct.

Free AI voice chat with daily limits

Duck.ai's new voice chat is being rolled out to both free users and subscribers. The feature is free to use, but is subject to daily usage limits. Those with a DuckDuckGo subscription have higher limits and can use the voice chat more extensively.

Voice chat is aimed at anyone who wants to use AI not just for text-based queries, but sees speech as an integral part of their workflow. The feature is optional and must be actively used.

Focus on data protection and anonymity

DuckDuckGo emphasizes that the new voice chat mode adheres to the same privacy principles as all other products and features of the company. All chats are anonymized and not used to train the underlying AI models.

OpenAI is used as the model provider for all voice chats. DuckDuckGo clarifies that neither DuckDuckGo nor OpenAI stores the streamed audio data after a chat ends. Furthermore, OpenAI is contractually limited to using voice chat data only to the extent necessary for providing the service.

This is how the voice mode works technically

When a voice chat is started, Duck.ai establishes an encrypted relay connection between the user and the OpenAI model. This connection cannot be decrypted by DuckDuckGo itself. The microphone's audio data is streamed to OpenAI in real time.

The model listens, transcribes the spoken content, and then generates both a spoken and a written response. All communication takes place live, without any permanent audio recordings being stored.

Browser support and availability

Duck.ai's real-time speech mode is currently available in most popular browsers. Firefox is currently the exception. Support for this browser has been announced and is expected soon.

Regardless of the browser, daily limits apply to all users. These limits are lower in the free version than for subscribers to ensure fair usage.

Collaboration with multiple AI providers

Duck.ai is not limited to a single provider. In addition to OpenAI, DuckDuckGo also collaborates with other well-known AI labs, including Meta, Anthropic, and Mistral. This openness allows for the use of different models and flexible development of the service without relinquishing control over user data.

Completely optional and can be deactivated at any time

In light of growing criticism of AI-powered features, DuckDuckGo places great emphasis on clearly communicating the voluntary nature of its use. Duck.ai's voice chat is entirely optional. Even after activation, voice mode can be deactivated at any time via the Duck.ai settings.

This means that DuckDuckGo's classic search function remains unchanged and usable, without AI functions being automatically integrated or imposed.
