iPhone and NFC: These innovations will shape the next few years

The iPhone has been using NFC for years for payments, tickets, keys, and an increasing number of everyday functions. Now there's a clearer outlook on where this technology is headed. A new roadmap from the NFC Forum shows which technical innovations are planned for the coming years and which of them are particularly relevant for the iPhone.

The NFC Forum is the world's leading standards organization for near-field communication. It determines how NFC will develop technically and which standards device manufacturers will implement. Apple is a member of the NFC Forum's board of directors. This makes it clear that the planned developments are also being created with the iPhone in mind and will have a long-term impact on its functionality.

The new, multi-year technology roadmap defines six key development priorities. These range from increased speed and new security standards to expanded applications of NFC.

Significantly higher NFC speed

One of the most important points of the roadmap is the planned increase in NFC data rate. In the future, transfers should be up to eight times faster than before. For the iPhone, this would mean shorter response times for contactless transactions. Payment processes, ticket scanning, and the exchange of information with accessories could thus be noticeably faster.

Improved interoperability in read mode

Another focus is on reliability in NFC read mode. The NFC Forum aims to improve interoperability through comprehensive end-to-end application testing. The goal is for NFC applications to work seamlessly together, regardless of the manufacturer. For the iPhone, this increases compatibility with terminals, cards, locks, and other NFC-enabled devices.

Multi-purpose tap for multiple actions

The roadmap also highlights the so-called multi-purpose tap functionality. This would allow a single NFC tap to enable multiple actions, depending on the context. For the iPhone, this opens up new use cases, such as combined payment and identity processes or accessing various services with just one touch.

Next-generation NFC charging

The NFC Forum is also beginning work on specifications for the next generation of NFC wireless charging. Plans include higher power levels and support for devices with multiple charging receivers. Currently, NFC charging is limited to accessories with very low power consumption. Expanded standards could become relevant for more complex devices in the future and have a long-term impact on the iPhone ecosystem.

Focus on safety and future viability

Security improvements are a key component of the roadmap. The release of the first NFC controller security profile is planned. This will define fundamental security requirements for NFC hardware. Additionally, the NFC Forum is working to secure NFC protocols against threats from post-quantum computing. Protection against so-called relay attacks will also be further strengthened. For the iPhone, this will ultimately mean a higher level of security for payments, keys, and identity solutions.

Digital keys remain a key issue

Digital keys remain an active area of development. New concepts are being developed to support a broader range of industry requirements, including mobility, hospitality, and corporate access. This could lead to the iPhone being used even more extensively as a universal digital key.

Timeline and Apple's current NFC strategy

The NFC Forum's last technology roadmap dates back to 2023. In parallel, Apple has already significantly expanded NFC usage on the iPhone. Last year, Tap to Pay was introduced on the iPhone in many new countries. This allows merchants to accept contactless payments directly on the iPhone without requiring additional hardware.

At the same time, in accordance with EU regulations, Apple has further opened up access to the iPhone's NFC chip for third-party providers. This allows Apple Pay competitors like Curve and PayPal to offer NFC-based payment options on iOS in Europe.

NFC continues to gain importance for the iPhone ecosystem

The new NFC roadmap clearly shows that the technology is poised for another surge in development. Higher speeds, improved security, new charging capabilities, and more flexible applications will shape the iPhone for years to come.
