Apple is further expanding its podcast division and is bringing on board an experienced industry professional. Collin Campbell, previously head of podcast strategy at NPR, is joining the Cupertino-based technology giant. This move demonstrates that Apple is increasingly taking a strategic view of the podcast business and is specifically bringing in expertise to strengthen its audio division.

Apple was one of the first major providers to integrate podcasts into its platform. The podcast app has been an integral part of the company's ecosystem for years, but the market has changed significantly. With Spotify, Amazon, and other streaming services, competition has grown significantly. To stay ahead of the competition, Apple is now relying on experienced professionals from the industry. According to media reporter Ben Mullin of the New York Times, Apple has secured Collin Campbell, formerly head of podcast strategy at NPR.

An experienced audio strategist joins Apple

Campbell joined NPR in 2023 as Senior Vice President of Podcast Strategy and Franchise Development. There, he oversaw all podcast performance, overseeing the growth of existing formats and developing new audio and video shows. His responsibilities included increasing reach and listener engagement, as well as establishing new formats that would expand NPR's podcast offerings. Before joining NPR, Campbell worked at Gimlet Media, a subsidiary of Spotify. There, he was Editor-in-Chief and thus closely involved in the development and management of several well-known podcasts. Gimlet is known for formats that have had a lasting impact on the podcast market, including productions like StartUp and Reply All. Campbell is now expected to bring this experience in journalistic storytelling and data-driven platform strategy to Apple.

Apple's goals in the podcast market

Apple has been an integral part of the podcast world since its early years, but has long focused on its role as a platform provider. Only in recent years has it become clearer that the company also wants to develop and curate its own content. By hiring Campbell, Apple is signaling that it will continue to expand this division. The new manager is likely to play a key role in expanding Apple's podcast offerings, planning new productions, and further developing its overall strategy. It is also conceivable that Apple will place greater emphasis on the connection between podcasts and its other services, for example through cross-promotion with Apple Music or series content from Apple TV+.

Another step in Apple's audio strategy

Campbell's move fits in with Apple's previous efforts to broaden its audio offering. In recent years, the company has increasingly focused on exclusive formats and invested in high-quality podcasts that are closely aligned with its brand identity. Campbell's experience in developing and managing large podcast franchises could enable Apple to focus more on content innovation and strategic branding in the audio space. According to current information, Campbell's new role at Apple has not yet been publicly described. However, it is expected that he will be integrated directly into the podcast leadership team and play a key role in shaping its strategic direction.

Apple relies on experience for the next podcast phase

Collin Campbell's move to Apple demonstrates that the company is taking the podcast space seriously and intends to further professionalize it. With his experience from NPR and Spotify, Campbell brings the blend of journalistic depth and commercial strategy that Apple needs for the next stage of its audio strategy. It's still unclear which specific projects he will take on, but the move suggests that Apple is likely to focus more on its own podcast content and strategic format expansions in the coming years.
