Apple Pay was introduced in Germany on December 11, 2018. With Apple's payment service, iPhones and Apple Watches can replace debit or credit cards. Now Austria will finally be able to enjoy mobile payment.
Now the time has come in the Alpine republic too - the prepaid credit card provider Boon has announced via Facebook that Apple Pay will soon be launched in Austria. Official confirmation from Apple is still pending. According to this, Boon has reached an agreement with Apple - its own app will soon be available in Austria too. Shortly after Boon's announcement, a statement from "Erste Bank und Sparkasse" followed. It remains to be seen which financial institutions will follow suit. An exact launch date was not communicated either.
What is Boon?
Users who are customers of non-participating banks or who do not have a credit card can easily create a virtual prepaid credit card through the provider Boon.
The setup can be handled entirely via the in-house Boon app. To do this, an account is created and filled in with personal data. An address and a valid mobile phone number are of course required here - this is used to log in and reset the password. After registration is complete, the system automatically generates a virtual Mastercard. This can now be topped up via bank transfer or credit card. The card must then be added to the Wallet app. Users who have an Apple Watch must do this separately. However, Boon is not free - after registration, the user can test the app in full for three months. After this phase, the user is charged 1.49 euros per month. Customers who upgrade to Boon Plus, the price remains the same, must provide proof of identity. The monthly transaction amount is then increased from 100 euros to 5,000 euros.
