Simply singing along is apparently no longer enough for Apple Music. The iOS 27.3 beta includes a new feature that records your performance, complete with running lyrics and vocal effects. However, this doesn't yet work with every song.
Selfie Sing is the name of the new feature that Apple Music is getting with iOS 27.3. It builds on Apple Music Sing, which Apple introduced in December 2022 and which lowers the volume of the original vocals in a song. Aaron Perris gave a first look at it in a video on X.
The first beta of iOS 27.3 is available to developers; Apple says the final version will be released in December. All articles about the service are compiled on the Apple Music page.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Selfie Sing records a video with the front camera while the song lyrics scroll across the screen.
- After the song, the volume of the voice and four effects can be adjusted.
- Not every song supports this feature; Apple bundles suitable tracks into a separate playlist.
- The playlist is already visible under iOS 27.2, but recording requires the iOS 27.3 beta.
This is how the recording works
After selecting a song, a camera icon starts the selfie view; tapping the red button starts recording. The lyrics then scroll across the screen. Once the song ends, you can adjust the volume of your own voice.
Here is your first look at Selfie Sing, new in iOS 27.3, inside of Apple Music Record a video selfie, adjusting vocals to make it yours, and share your performance with friends (Animoji is not available for this feature, I used it so I don't have to post a video of me singing) https://t.co/fLQ3B5DV4N

Four effects are also included: Megaphone, Echo, Concert Hall, and Studio. The video is then saved to the Photos app or sent directly to others. No separate app is required. According to Perris, Animoji are not part of the feature; he only used one for his video.
Only selected songs
Not every song supports Selfie Sing. Apple has compiled suitable tracks in a dedicated playlist, currently featuring 49 well-known sing-along songs, including „Respect“ by Aretha Franklin, „Wonderwall“ by Oasis, and „Like a Virgin“ by Madonna. Apple describes them as follows:
There are songs everyone knows by heart—and suddenly the whole room is singing along. This playlist is full of them, and every track is ready for your next selfie sing. Pick your favorite song, record a selfie sing, add microphone effects to your voice, and save your video selfie or share it with whomever you like.
The playlist already appears on devices with iOS 27.2, but the camera only appears with the beta of iOS 27.3. According to Perris, the function can be activated there by manually accessing the playlist in the search.
According to Cult of Mac, the clips are currently only recorded in portrait mode. Apparently, only the rear lenses on the iPhone Duo are recording, with the text then appearing on the external display.
What Selfie Sing requires
Apple has not yet released its own requirements for Selfie Sing. Apple Music Sing requires an active subscription and at least an iPhone 11 or iPhone SE (3rd generation) on the iPhone.
The subscription price has recently increased in this country.
Why Apple is bringing karaoke video into its own app
I see Selfie Sing less as a music feature and more as a way to create social media content directly within Apple Music. While the clip ultimately leaves the app, the recording, lyrics, and effects remain with Apple.
For most, it will likely remain a party game, especially since the playlist currently only includes 49 tracks. I expect it to grow by the time iOS 27.3 is released: Apple Music Sing launched in 2022 with more than 50 of its own playlists.
Would you film yourself singing and send the video, or do you prefer karaoke without a camera? Let us know in the comments which song you'd sing first.
