Apple struggles with talent exodus to OpenAI and internal resignations

Apple is currently experiencing a period of unusually high employee departures. Particularly striking is the move of numerous engineers and designers to OpenAI, despite Apple's long-standing reputation as a company that retains talent. This shift is clearly noticeable and affects some of the most important product areas, from audio and wearables to robotics. The consequences extend far beyond internal restructuring and are impacting the entire competitive landscape of the tech sector.

Current developments demonstrate the dramatic shift in the artificial intelligence and hardware market. Companies like OpenAI and Meta are capitalizing on this shift by actively recruiting skilled professionals from Apple. Simultaneously, Apple is losing not only technical experts but also executives from key departments.

Talent exodus to OpenAI

According to the Wall Street Journal, many Apple engineers and designers have left the company in recent months and moved to OpenAI. Areas particularly affected include audio development, watch design, robotics, and other fields closely related to Apple's core product lines.

LinkedIn data confirms this trend. It shows that OpenAI is building its own hardware division and is specifically recruiting experienced talent for it. The profiles of former Apple employees who now work at OpenAI reveal that they were previously involved in key projects. These include industrial design for wearable devices and audio technologies for iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch. Some individuals also report experience in robotics. OpenAI plans to launch its own hardware device as early as next year and is securing expertise that was previously strongly associated with Apple.

Further poaching by Meta

Not only OpenAI, but also Meta is taking advantage of the current situation to recruit specialists from Apple. Among the recently hired individuals is Alan Dye, a long-time and influential designer at Apple. Meta is in the midst of a recruitment drive primarily targeting AI and smartglasses. This also reinforces the impression that Apple is losing expertise that would be crucial for the company's future direction.

Resignations within Apple

Alongside the external recruitment efforts, Apple is also dealing with several resignations from its own leadership ranks. These include Kate Adams, Senior Vice President and General Counsel; Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives; and John Giannandrea, Apple's leading figure in artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Jeff Williams, Chief Operating Officer, and Luca Maestri, Chief Financial Officer, also announced their departures.

Additionally, rumors circulated that Tim Cook might also step down as CEO as early as next year. Even though there is no official confirmation, the mere fact that this is being discussed demonstrates how sensitive the current situation is perceived.
