WWDC 2025 is just around the corner – Apple's developer conference begins on June 9th at 7 p.m. German time. As every year, Apple is using the opportunity to showcase the future of its operating systems and software solutions. This time, things could be particularly exciting: Numerous leaks and rumors point to profound changes, especially with iOS 19 and macOS 16. Apple is in the midst of a major design and functionality overhaul. With iOS 19 and macOS 16, the company not only wants to breathe new life into its user interfaces, but also integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into everyday life. A lot is also happening with the AirPods and native apps.
iOS 19 gets a completely new design
Apple is planning the biggest design change for iOS 19 since the radical overhaul of iOS 7. The new look is heavily inspired by visionOS, the operating system of Apple's Vision Pro. You can expect round buttons, more transparency, glass-like interface elements, and an overall cleaner look. The goal is to place more emphasis on content while making operation even more intuitive. The new design probably won't appeal to everyone—similar to iOS 7, it will likely generate heated debate.
macOS 16 gets a new name – and a new look
Apple traditionally names new macOS versions after locations in California. This will continue in 2025. The shortlist includes: Condor, Redwood, Shasta, Skyline, Pacific, Miramar, Mammoth, Grizzly, Redtail, Tiburon, and Rincon. The final name is still up in the air, but one thing is certain: macOS 16 will also receive a design overhaul based on visionOS. This means more transparency, reduced visual elements, and a more modern user interface.
New design language also for apps
Along with the new iOS 19 user interface, Apple is also redesigning many of its own apps. The focus is on transparency, rounded controls, fewer distracting elements, and clear tab bars. Everything is designed to appear more fluid and visually consistent. This means the entire system adapts seamlessly to the new design philosophy.
AI-supported battery management brings longer runtimes
iOS 19 introduces a smart battery mode that uses artificial intelligence to analyze your usage behavior. The system automatically adjusts settings, reduces unnecessary energy consumption, and optimizes background processes. Particularly interesting: apps and system functions that you rarely use are automatically throttled in their power consumption. This is intended not only to increase battery life but also to extend battery life.
Live Translation for AirPods – Understand conversations in real time
A real highlight: Apple is working on a live translation feature for the AirPods. This will allow you to have conversations in other languages translated in real time – directly through your earbuds. The feature is expected to be introduced with iOS 19 and a firmware update for the AirPods. It will likely initially be available only with the AirPods Pro, possibly in conjunction with the new AirPods Pro 3, which are scheduled to be released in 2025.
