Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference 2022 is just around the corner. Below you can find out what we can expect from Apple.
WWDC 2022 takes place in one week's time. On June 06 we will learn more about Apple's plans for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, macOS 13 and tvOS 16. Apple might also unveil new hardware or announce a future product. Let's get started.
iOS 16: The soul of the iPhone
What could be more interesting than a completely new iPhone operating system? At WWDC 2022, we will learn all about the operating system that will give the next generation of iPhones its soul. Previous rumors suggest that Apple plans to revamp the notification center and lock screen and add more features to the focus mode announced last year. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also believes that iOS 16 could support an always-on lock screen for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in the future, which has long been speculated about. The journalist also believes that iOS 16 will include wallpapers that have widget-like functions. He also assumes that social network-like functions will be integrated into iMessage and that new health functions will be added.
iPadOS 16 could unleash the iPad's full potential
Unlike iOS 16, the iPadOS 16 rumors are a mix of insider information and what users have been demanding for a long time. Gurman says he expects "big changes to windows and multitasking." If this turns out to be true, iPad users could finally take advantage of the beautiful hardware already available with the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models with the M1 chip. Just like iOS 16, iPadOS 16 will likely offer a redesigned lock screen and Notification Center, as well as enhanced Focus Mode features. What else could Apple offer? Who knows, it remains exciting.
macOS 13 could be called “Mammoth”
In the past, it was suggested, based on trademark filings, that Apple might launch macOS 13 with the name "Mammoth." Not only that, but with the transition from Intel-powered Macs to the company's own silicon now complete (except for the Mac Pro), there will be a whole host of features that will be exclusive to M1 Macs. In his recent "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that the Mac will receive some redesigned apps and a "much-needed overhaul of System Preferences to be more consistent with iOS's settings" as part of WWDC 2022. While the Health app won't be included in macOS 13—meaning another year without Apple Fitness+ on the Mac—users can expect interesting features for this operating system.
watchOS 9: What can the Apple Watch expect?
In addition to iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13, watchOS 9 is also expected. Some rumors suggest that the company will finally update the old watch faces to make them look better on larger displays, like those of the Apple Watch Series 7. There will also be an improved Low Power Mode feature and "significant improvements that impact daily use and navigation" of the Apple Watch. New workouts and health features are also expected to be part of the new features.
tvOS 16: Will the Apple TV get more attention this year?
Last year, Apple skipped tvOS entirely during its keynote. Now fans are hoping that Apple will pay more attention to the Apple TV this year with tvOS 16. According to Gurman, tvOS 16 will feature "more smart home integrations," something that's already expected from this operating system. Apple could also announce support for additional languages on the HomePod. The Apple TV and HomePod mini are the hubs of Apple users' smart home setups, so the company needs to focus on bringing even more smart home solutions to these devices.
What about the MacBook Air 2022?
In addition to the new operating systems, Apple could also unveil the 2022 MacBook Air at WWDC 2022. In the latest issue of the "Power On" newsletter, Gurman says:
If there is any hardware at WWDC, it will probably be on the Mac side. The company could unveil the next MacBook Air with M2 chips at the conference.
Of course, WWDC is actually a software event. However, hardware announcements are still possible, as we have already seen in previous years. If Apple does indeed unveil a new MacBook Air, the device will have a brand new design and will probably be equipped with the M2 chip.
WWDC 2022: Will Apple talk about realityOS next week?
So far, it is unclear whether Apple will announce the upcoming realityOS at WWDC 2022 or not. What is certain is that all other operating systems are likely to hint at a range of new features for Apple's mixed reality headset, which is due to be unveiled later this year. Even if Apple doesn't unveil realityOS, we can still look forward to a whole host of new features for iPhone, iPad and co.
