For several months now, there have been rumors that Apple is planning to introduce a brand new iMac. This naturally raises the question of whether it will use Apple Silicon. Let's take a closer look at the whole thing.
About a week before the start of WWDC 2020, reports surfaced that Apple would unveil a brand new iMac during the event. The device was not shown, however. That doesn't mean the unveiling couldn't happen soon.
All rumors about the iMac 2020 at a glance
First, let's summarize what we know about the upcoming iMac model. If the rumors are to be believed, the new model will have a slimmer design that is reminiscent of both the Pro Display XDR and the iPad Pro. Whether the case will remain the same size and thus offer a larger image remains to be seen. When it comes to size, reports have been documented that the iMac 21.5″ model could be released with 23″ or 24″. There is still nothing to say about the 27-inch version. The new iMac series will also no longer have a Fusion drive option but will only rely on SSD. In addition, the new generation will receive Apple's T2 security chip. A recently discovered benchmark has also revealed the features of the high-end model. According to this, the new iMac could have an Intel Core i9-10910 CPU with the AMD Radeon Pro 5300 graphics processor. Further details remain unknown for the time being.
When will the 2020 iMac be released?
The release date is open to speculation. Since the device was not presented at WWDC 2020, the presentation could take place at any time via a press release. But there are indications that the launch is imminent. The recently discovered benchmark result is considered to be one of them. In addition, Apple itself is also showing treacherousAnyone who wants to order a 27" iMac today must expect unusually long delivery times - unless the device is picked up at the Apple Store. This would not be new. Cupertino has often released new Mac models in July and since last year at the latest, Apple seems to have developed a penchant for press releases. Apart from that, there are reports that mass production is already underway. So the chances of a timely launch are pretty good. But now we come to the question of what's going on with Apple Silicon and whether it's worth buying the upcoming iMac.
What about Apple Silicon?
One thing is clear: if you are planning to buy an iMac, a little patience would be worthwhile. But the upcoming model will have an Intel chip for the last time before Apple Silicon is used - this seems certain. According to Apple's own statements, Apple's roadmap envisages the company switching the entire Mac product range to silicon processors in the next two years. The first models are to be presented at the end of 2020. In the meantime, Intel Macs will follow. If you urgently need a new Mac, I advise you to at least wait for the updated models - these will be maintained and updated by Apple for a long time. However, if the new purchase is not so urgent, you can also wait for a Mac with an Apple Silicon processor. The advantages of Macs with Apple's own processor are much more extensive than many people suspect. For example, the devices can run iPhone or iPad applications natively, while Intel Macs cannot. They also work more efficiently and are more powerful. By the way – the first Apple Silicon iMac could be a 24″ model. At least that is what the well-known and accurate Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested. Further developments will therefore remain exciting.
