The MacBook Pro 16″ was first unveiled by well-known star analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in February 2019. Initially, Kuo expected the device to be unveiled next year. That has changed over the last few months – it is now expected to be released this fall.

Since February 2019, there has been a lot of reporting about the upcoming professional notebook. However, not all details are known yet - but enough for a summary. We have read many reports about the price, design, keyboard, screen and innards of the new MacBook Pro model. But let's start with the exterior.

The design of the Macbook Pro 16″

The accurate star analyst Ming-Chi Kuo announced the new super notebook in February and particularly highlighted the design. It will appear in a "completely new design," Kuo wrote at the time. What exactly the device will look like remains unclear to this day. However, the numerous details of the last few months have given us a picture of it. Although the new MacBook Pro will have a screen diagonal of 16 inches, the size of the case will remain the same as its predecessor. But how does that work? The display itself will have narrower edges - a so-called edge-to-edge display. If the form factor remains the same, the weight should hardly differ from the predecessor - it is currently around 1.83 kg.

The display of the MacBook Pro 16″

According to recent rumors, the enlarged display and keyboard are the real design changes. The materials for the casing itself are said to remain largely the same and reminiscent of its predecessor. Although the display is larger and the device itself will remain the same size, it should prove popular with many fans as the balance between performance and mobility remains undisturbed. Many still mourn the 17" model of the time - even if it was less compact. Apple does not seem to have forgotten this point. The resolution of the new display is said to be 3072 × 1920 pixels - the 15-inch model only has 2880 × 1800. So there is an increase here too. Although some analysts expected an OLED screen, there is said to be no change. According to rumors, Apple is still relying on excellent LCD panels.

The specifications of the MacBook Pro 16″

Predicting the exact specifications of a device is generally always difficult. One thing is certain: the new MacBook Pro 16″ is supposed to be a beast. According to a current rumor, the new professional notebook could be equipped with Intel’s 9th generation Coffee Lake processors. The i9 chip is said to have up to eight cores and clock at 2.4 GHz. The Turbo Boost reaches a whopping 5.0 GHz. There is also said to be a version with an i7 processor. This only has six cores. Whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen. Some observers believe that Apple could give the new super notebook the 10th generation Intel Ice Lake processor. You see – it’s a difficult topic. Let’s wait and see.

The keyboard of the MacBook Pro 16″

By far the most exciting thing about the new MacBook Pro 16" is the keyboard. The previous butterfly keyboard was a well-intentioned idea from Apple. If it weren't so vulnerable, it would certainly be much more popular. Some users have had good luck over the past few years, while others have had to replace their keyboard more than once. There is a corresponding exchange program for this - more on that here. But which technology is supposed to replace the controversial butterfly mechanism? According to some rumors, the new keyboard is said to have been developed on the basis of scissor switches - i.e. with a real pressure mechanism like in previous years. Despite the old technology, the design of the upcoming keyboard is said to be completely new - Apple also wants to increase the durability of the keys. Fiberglass will supposedly be used here. However, the technology is not exclusive. Star analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the new keyboard will be found in all MacBook models by the end of next year.

This is how much the new MacBook Pro 16″ will cost

The question of how expensive the device will be is at least as much of a concern to some of us as the keyboard. It is generally expected that the new MacBook Pro 16-inch model will have a starting price of around $3,000. The cost of the high-end configuration is still up in the air. The starting price would not be much higher than in previous years. For comparison - when Apple introduced the 17-inch MacBook in 2009, it was advertised at $2,799 - so no reason to get excited.

When will the MacBook Pro 16″ be introduced?

While a small number of sources claim that the new MacBook Pro 16" will be presented in September this year, the majority believe that it will be presented in October. A look into the past makes the majority seem more credible. In recent years, Apple has presented the new iPhone and Apple Watch generation in September. New iPad and Mac models were presented at a second event - this has previously taken place in October. Of course, Apple could change its plans at any time and try something new. If that is not the case, then Cupertino will almost certainly follow the old pattern. The presentation of the new MacBook Pro 16" model can therefore be expected in October this year.
